Thumbs Down

I really wanted to like this movie, I enjoy slow moving period pieces, but:

1. The female lead character never gets up to help work, she just watches people. The scene where they are baking a pie, why didnt she just start rolling dough or something and make herself useful. I think they have had pie in Germany for a long time, she should be able to help out.

2. The bad guy, well what a shock, it's the minister at the church. When was the last positive reverand or priest? The old guy in the Bells of St. mary's?

3. She gets up in the night, runs accross a feild, washes clothes, and falls asleep in the bath tub.Very unlikely.

4. They do have something right, ask anyone who moves to Minnesota from another state and they are shocked at how unfreindly the state is (I live here by the way). People in the south are 1,000 times more freindly. People out east might be rude but at least they are interesting.

5. How did the movie end? I only stayed around for about half of it.

I don't know whom you ran into in MN, but I was born and reared in St. Paul. Folks always seemed friendly to me, and Minnesotans are generally considered to be nice to a fault.

It is better to be kind than to be clever or good looking. -- Derek

You have no idea what you are talking about. I grew up in Minnesota, and have lived all over the US. People in Minnesota are not unfriendly compared to people in the south and other states - they are just more reserved than people in the other states. There's a difference.

If you believe people in Minnesota are unfriendly (or lack manners), you have never lived on the east coast.

As for the film, the woman was exhausted, having not slept much in days - of course she could fall asleep in the bathtub.

She was asked directly whether she had pie in Germany- and she said no. That doesn't mean there were no pies in Germany - it means she didn't have pie. And she did begin to help others, after the initial shock of being there and facing the blank stares and disapproval of the community wore off.

The minister came around and was kind at the end of the movie - giving his own money to help save the farm and also agreeing to allow the couple into the church. The point was that Inge's kindness and wisdom influenced the minister, as it did the other people in her community.
