This movie utterly SUCKS, and here is precisely why:

I hated this movie after finishing it, and I set out to do some research on its redeeming qualities in case there was something I had overlooked. I found nothing. The problem is the following:

Considering what the movie was trying to say, it is completely UNACCEPTABLE that "Haeley" did not die at the end. The movie needed it - well, ANYTHING - and the filmmakers did NOT have the balls to do it. Nothing happened to her, despite the fact that she was getting perverted joy out of torturing him. They tackled a controversial topic in an attempt to be cool and hip, and yet they ended up making a heap of crap of a flick that is sure to please each and every conservative and pedophile-hater. People who abuse children deserve zero sympathy, that's a given. But let's look at the facts right here:

This movie features a supposedly underage girl who chops off a pedophile's balls, while insulting and torturing him all the way. The pedophile hangs himself in the end, after having the girl lie to him once again. Nothing happens to the girl, and she learns nothing. NOTHING. Nothing about life, about people, about things perhaps not being as black and white as they first seem.Instead, a pedophile gets mutilated, just what everyone wants to see, and it's then milked for views.

What a *beep* of *beep* I rated this movie 1/10 in an attempt to bring its mediocre rating even lower. This was the biggest pile of pretentious crap I have seen in a long time. The filmmakers milked an interesting idea and offered the viewer zero substance. Completely unacceptable and pathetic.

I am open to opposing views, but HOW could you ever counter what I just said? There is no substance.

talk to the hand, you surely are used to it.

Why on earth would anyone think a psychopathic teenage girl we know nothing about who hates Goldfrapp is a sympathetic character? We learn nothing about her other than her awful taste in music, don't actually see her struggle significantly, and yet we learn quite a bit about him and do see him struggle against odds. And it's not until the very end that we are convinced he is definitely as bad as she claims, which at that point all I wanted to do was turn it off. It's extremely poorly structured even if an interesting idea and fairly well-acted, but if you're rooting for the pedophile murderer most of the film, then probably the filmmaker has messed up. But seriously, who the %$#@! hates Goldfrapp?

Uh, far ballsier to let her get away with it. Life isn't like Hollywood and poetic justice is just catharsis for the audience.

It really is hard to argue with the OP.

reply

yeah, but only because he has a hard time understanding basic sentences.

It's better than being a dumbass who thinks these replies are indicative of anything other than an idiot thinking they are more clever than the others on the board when in actuality they can't put together a single reply that demonstrates it.

I know she didn't really castrate him, but found all the sweating she did during the castration scene odd.

OP, My reaction to your transparently predictable whine-fest is the same one I had on the Funny Games message board and any Todd Solondz film as well: The mere fact that the film was divisive and produces continued debate proves that it achieved something that most mainstream films rarely do.

Question:

OP, who exactly, are you trying to convert or influence here with your vitriolic opposition to this low-budget film that literally only grossed $1,024,640 at the Box Office? I mean, if this film was a box office hit, or won an Academy Award, or inspired countless "teen enacts revenge against male pedophile" imitators, I could understand your dire need to spew your opinions all over the net, as your outrage might be construed as somewhat necessary and justifiable in that case. But given the film's microscopic viewership, don't you think you're kind of preaching to the choir?

"Completely unacceptable and pathetic".

Darn it, I myself (and I am sure the makers of this film) were really hoping to win your "acceptance". Boo Hoo.

"They tackled a controversial topic in an attempt to be cool and hip."

How many people did you interview or what empirical research did you conduct to come to your objective and unbiased conclusion that the filmmaker's were aiming for "cool and hip"? A little smug on your part, don't you think, to assume that the filmmakers, who put forth the effort to making the film,(which,on a production of this scale, requires tremendous hard work and sacrifice) were aiming and hoping to achieve the status of your universally-accepted definition of "cool and hip"?

"Instead, a pedophile gets mutilated, just what everyone wants to see, and it's then milked for views".

"Just what everyone wants to see" huh? Do I need to remind you again that this film grossed a whopping $1,024,640 at the Box Office? How many people did you poll to be in a position to make a blanket statement like that, hmm? Oh, and can you remind me when the pedophile gets mutilated? I think I missed that part. I was too busy being cool and hip.

"....and yet they ended up making a heap of crap of a flick that is sure to please each and every conservative and pedophile-hater."

"Every conservative and pedophile-hater", huh? Again, pretty bold assumption, wouldn't ya say? Maybe we should now go back and survey 'each and every' conservative and pedophile-hater, just to make sure you were correct in your assertion? I mean, I know you are a genius that doesn't deserve to be second-guessed, but.....It's ok, I'll wait. :)

"Nothing happened to her, despite the fact that she was getting perverted joy out of torturing him".

I would venture to say that you got way more "perverted joy" out of taking the moral high ground while trashing a film that an infinitesimal portion of the population paid to see, many of whom feel the same way you did anyhow.

Yeah it's a shock film, we get it. Nothing more. Todd Solondz at least can write a script and create human characters. Haneke in many films at least doesn't do the typical shock troupes and are purposefully hollow.

Hard Candy is just a slick torture film with good acting. There's nothing to it.

reply

a shock film? hahahaha. i guess you have no idea what a shock film is. hard candy has a purpose, a pretty obvious one. shock films don't. there is no "point" to august underground, all night long, schoolgirl in cement or similar films.

Sorry if this has already been discussed.
If you're going to have an actress portray a character who is supposed to be 14 years old, make sure the actress is 14 years old.

I'm guessing Ellen Page was 17 during filming.
That's a huge difference.

reply

Dear OP, why did you want hayley to get murdered or something bad happen to her? are you pedophile or something?
