What’s that all about? Was this ever explained?

It wasn’t a goat, it was a goatman also known as the Nubserosis. They existed up until around 200 BC before being completely wiped out by plague. Fossil remnants are still being discovered
in some parts of Montana. I thought it was a nice touch on Snyder’s part to include their presence in the film.
