Dakota Fanning

Normally I like her
But I just wanted to slap her in just about every scene she was in. Her character was just an annoying little brat.

Back in 2005 this board had at least 10 threads full of people complaining about the yelling Dakota. Now 10 years later I see the hate for her has no ceased a bit. LOL

reply

It's heartwarming to see, isn't it?

I dunno, even in the Twighlight utter *beep* movies Dakota gives off the impression that she is a little spoilt cow.

reply

I'm not saying she is in real life, I hear Dakota is a very nice person, but in those 2 movies, no imo. She was great in Man On Fire. She crys a lot though.

reply

brat? how was she a brat exactly? a brat is someone who doesn't listen to their parents, who complains and throws tantrums and is stubborn. which fanning did none of in the film. she acted scared at times. her character had small panic attacks, but who wouldn't if aliens were coming out of the ground trying to destroy everyone?? she wasn't a brat. she only showed concern and care for her brother and dad. fanning and cruise were the stars of this film. and I would even go as far to say that her acting, in some cases, surpassed cruise's.

I know that this is months after you initially posted this, but I think a better word would have been "Annoying." I'm sure the OP would feel the same sentiments regardless of the word used. And yes, her character was annoying in this movie. I'm not picking apart the actions of a child reacting to real world situations. I just found her character annoying.

I am literally watching it now, in the background, whilst writing something up and came here to see if that was the case. I've been pleading for her to meet a grisly end but for some reason she keeps managing to evade a just fate.

Very unlikeable children that lead you to root for the aliens to win.

reply

Yeah I would have paid the aliens to suck the blood out of her.

Dakota is a great actress and she did the part good. She was meant to be a screaming child and she was. Don't know ho else she was supposed to act.

So she wasn't more annoying than the average kid walking around.

reply

In reality, maybe. In a movie, we don't want to put up with it for 2 hours.

...then whoa, differences...

The. Most. Annoying. Character. Ever.

Her character ruined the movie for me, i love rewatching it, but every scene
with her makes me cringe. Would've been a much better movie without her.

reply

Hated the screaming. Also she looked like she hadn't slept in weeks!

reply

Both she and Robbie were totally annoying. I wouldn't blame Ray if he left and abandoned them in the car!

Kids in a movie finding themselves in a real pickle (to put it mildly) and spending the majority of the time screaming... is something I can usually tolerate. A lot of the time it is realistic and doesn’t feel overdone.

When it comes to Dakota in this film, yeah, she’s unbearable. I know some kids will overact more than others in scary situations but, idk, I do feel like she went overboard with her performance. Her grating high-pitched screaming is especially the worst! I do like the movie but maybe it would’ve been better to see another actress in this role.

reply

The point was made on another website that both kids could have benefited from a good swat on their butts.

reply

I guess Spielberg was trying to show the dangers of having kids that don't understand consequences, don't listen, and are spoiled.

Either that, or he was NUTS!
