I love edward norton but this just bored me to tears . After a nice build up over the relationship with the girl the film just got slower and slower too torpid levels . The film then via a couple of taxi driver style references became a full on modern day western in an almost laughable climax . I mean the scene when they wake up in a western film shoot is unintentionally hilarious .
Dreadful confused movie i cant believe it got a prize at cannes .avoid
Well despite mostly everyone disagreed with your comment, I however must back up on that. I too am a big Edward Norton fan, I even brought the dvd for £15 and then realising soon after that I wasted my money.
Watching it, I feel now that Edward Norton is perhaps a bit too much of a try hard now, his performance as usual is good but just didnt really fit with the cowboy idea or make it seem believable. Instead I just saw him as Edward Norton with his usual method stutting acting. I also think he inspires to much to be his idols and favourite films but doesn't cross over too well on film such as the taxi driver reference.
Evan-Rachel Wood was perhaps good in it although it was the same cliche of every role she plays, the screaming teenage girl yelling at her parent.

You do realize that Harlan was not really a cowboy? It was just a persona he made up.
I had mixed reactions to this film. Overall I liked it though. I loved the first half with the relationship between Harlem and the girl. I think the rest should have been dealt with differently.
I think they could cut the whole "reasoning behind things going out of control as they made it look like he was having a psychotic breakdown possibly as a result of drugs, I'm basing that on the scene in his room where it looks like hes smoking a joint.
That would have sped the story up abit and made it more exciting. He becomes the bad guy in a way and I would prefer it if the dad had puched them to the edge and made them react in self defence and then go on the run and he dies a hero etc. Thats what I had been expecting to happen.
Also what was with the kids throwing his ashes at the end. First of all he almost killed the girl why would they still care for him. Also how the hell would they get ahold of the ashes after all he did apparently have a family.
One thing that confuses me, It would suggest he was telling the truth about his father leaving him when he was young as when he breaks into the house and Edward Norton speaks what is on the letter he says that he doesnt blame him for what he did. Supposedly refering to leaving him. In other letters he writes before you realise its his father hes writing to he says things like I know you worry about me beeing out here and other things that suggest he is in contact with his father. This also ties in with his criminal background etc. Bit confusing wonder what anyone else thinks.
It was a good watch though and beautifully shot.
Gazbomb why are you beeing so childish about this are you gona lay into me now because I enjoyed it to?
