How is Andy a bad salesman?

I know it becomes a running gag by Season 7 that Andy is the worst salesman in the office. But when we are first introduced to him in Season 3, his title was Regional Director in Charge of Sales, which means he is basically in charge of the sales group. I think you would have to be a pretty damn good salesman to get that title.

reply

Seriously?????!!!!!!

That's a made up title he probably gave himself, or the boss gave him just to make him feel good. It's on par with Dwight being "Assistant TO the Regional Manager". It just means he's a kiss-ass.

It's hard to believe he could be worse than Stanley and Phillys who are both super lazy and low energy.

There were actually 2 episodes where Andy he made an important sale.

reply

It's actually very easy to believe because its made very clear on the show. While Stanley appears to be low energy and lazy, its actually more just apathy. He does his job, and does it well, but is not interested in doing more than he has too. He has very steady and consistent sales numbers, and a loyal base of clients, as we saw on the sales call with Ryan.

We don't get much info on Phyliss as a sales person, but nothing to indicate that she's lazy. She did close the deal when she was on a sales call with Karen.

I don't know, Stanley and Phyliss might come off lazy but from what i remember, they seemed to handle their business quite well when it came to doing their jobs. Remember when Michael took away their clients calling himself punishing them? They both absolutely demanded those clients back so that they could do their job and earn their money.

reply

Stanley was not lazy at all. He wanted to work. He had to because of his daughter.

This is why he hated being dragged to Michael’s meetings. Time spent there is time he couldn’t make sales.

reply

Maybe he was great in Stanford but when Pam is first pregnant , she and Andy state they had to go out on sales calls because they are the least productive salespeople . When she and Andy pretend to be a couple and he kisses her belly. 🤣

reply

I could never find any evidence that the writers of this show were dedicated to keeping everything realistic.

You know like "if this then that can't be so..."
