I'm surprised that no one's mentioned "Days Of Glory" ("Indigenes"), about North African soldiers who fought for France in WW2. Personally, I probably wouldn't include it among my top 5, but I just saw it a few days ago and I thought it was amazing. The battle scenes are few and far between, but they're gritty, nasty, and quite realistic, although not nearly as spectacular as some of the stuff in "Tae Guk Gi." Mercifully it has none of the overwrought sentimentality which, for me, somewhat diminished the Korean film.

"Tae Guk Gi" is a brilliant war movie and this movie was released in a great special edition dvd version by E-M-S in germany. the same company who will release jean-claude van damme´s "Until Death" in germany.

reply

"Tae Guk Gi" was also released in the USA in a 2-disc Special Edition.

reply

Well.. its hard to tell if you haven't seen them all. I have seen them all and here is the top5 (which is based more on the realistic -than the typical patriotic part):

1. Das Boot
2. La Battaglia di Algeri
3. Idi i smotri
4. Apocalypse Now
5. A bridge too far

Others I think qualify as the best ones:

The English Patient, The Battle of Britain, Patton, Stalingrad, Der Untergang, Big Red One, Band of Brothers, The Longest Day, Thin Red Line, Guns of Navarone, The Pianist, Deer Hunter, Tae Guk Gi, Saving Private Ryan, Uprising, Glory, Gods And Generals, Lawrence of Arabia, Black Hawk Down, Schindlers List.

I'm also sure many of you haven't seen BBCs 'Dunkirk'. If you're interested in parts of the WWII history I can highly recommend it, its a good documentary movie in 3 episodes.
