The best performances not nominated for Oscars.

I started this thread on the board for A Clockwork Orange. I think that Malcolm McDowell is possibly the biggest Oscar nomination snub of all time. Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma also came to mind. What are some other performances people think were robbed of a nomination?

If you eat a peanut butter sandwich and can still speak coherently, you've done something wrong.

reply

Ben Foster, yes but also Christian Bale, and Russell Crowe. Not to mention the movie, the director and the writer.

The Oscars lost a lot of cred when this movie was totally ignored. It's like they think they aren't doing a good job if they don't nominate weird movies that make little sense and no one wants to watch. I mean, heaven forbid a movie recognized by the academy be actually entertaining.

There are so many.

There are 3 in this film alone.
Ben Foster, Russel Crowe, and Christian Bale.

Others would be:

Guy Pearce: Memento
Christian Bale: American Psycho, The Machinist
Viggo Mortensen: History of Violence, THE ROAD
Sergi Lopez: Pan's Labyrinth
Brian Cox: Manhunter
Jack Nicholsen: The Departed
Paul Dano: There Will Be Blood
Brad Pitt: The Assasination of Jesse James
Philip Seymour Hoffman: Magnolia, Doubt (not that the film was that good)
Mery Streep: Doubt

I'm sure there are many more, especially from earlier years that I am forgetting.

reply

Meryl Streep was nominated for Doubt. And I am totally with you on Brad Pitt. His performance in Jesse James was WAY ahead of Benjamin Button, but BB just got more attention in it's year.

reply

Val Kilmer-Tombstone.
Christian Bale-American Psycho.

reply

Dylan Baker - Happiness

reply

Christian Bale-American Psycho

Leonardo Dicaprio- For The Departed and The Titanic

Edward Norton-The 25th hour

I think the Oscars usually nominate the right people, but I don't think they pick the right winners all the time.

DiCaprio correctly shouldn't of been nominated for Departed, he played his usual self. He was boring in too.

Christian Bale - Machinist, Psycho, Rescue Dawn (how has nobody else mentioned this? he was incredible, he also lost a good bit of weight for it, evident in 3.10 to Yuma!)

Steve Zahn - Rescue Dawn

Ray Liotta - Goodfellas

Ed Norton - American History X

reply

Norton was nominated for american history X, (and robbed btw)

but i totaly agree with bale in rescue dawn, nobody mentions it, i think its cuz everyone hates werner herzog

I disagree with your assessment of DiCaprio. Have you ever seen "what's eating Gilbert Grape?" ? How about "Marvin's Room"? Or "A Boy's Life"? DiCaprio is one of the BEST actors in the world.

Go to your library and borrow the dvd "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?". You will NOT believe your eyes.

Ben Foster should have been nominated as well as Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. I would have even liked to see a nomination for Best Picture.

I think it was snubbed because it was a remake. There are too many older people in the Academy that remembered the first.

reply

although Russell Crowe is my all time absolute favorite actor, I was pleasantly surprised at Christian Bale's performance in this movie and was shocked he didn't garner at the least a nomination. His portrayal of Dan Evans in all his complicated struggles was heart wrenching. I haven't cried at the end of a movie like this in years. he was absolutely amazing.

Al Pacino for Donnie Brasco and John Cazale for Godfather 2

reply

Al Pacino for:
-Scarface (1983)
-Carlito's Way (1993)
-Heat (1995)
-Donnie Brasco (1997)

And yes I do believe Al Pacino is most likely the best actor of all time, at least the person with the strongest presence on screen.
