Speak up Radha, speak clearly Kimberly

This film,in my esteemed opinion as an ardent filmbuff, is excellent. This estimation, mind, is based soley on Evan Rachel Wood's performance.
Kimberly joyce is just like my ex girlfriend, a manipulative self-absorbed nymphet. Which is why, I both loved and hate it. Evan Rachel's performance holds up as one of the all time great "viper to my bosom" roles, surpassing even Pamela Franklin's 'Sandy' from Ronald Neames's 1968 classic; The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. Dwarfing even similar films like Election, To die For, inter alia. I was in a word, mesmerised. But, and this an important 'But', the film is carelessly structured, the narrative is a little confused, and most annoyingly, Kim slurs her words, and Randha did not get enough lines to really matter. Anyone agree or disagree?

I also agree, I thought it was the DVD quaility, but I found out about other people who had trouble making out what she was saying.

Heather Duke: Veronica, you look like hell.
Veronica Sawyer: Yeah? I just got back.

I think everyone has an ex-girlfriend or two just like Kimberly.

Maybe Evan Rachel Wood is from the same neck of the woods as I am, but I understood everything she said really clearly.

Randha was supposed to be really timid and conservative, and she played it well. I've met girls very much like her from other countries. I've also met girls from other countries who can't shut up (sometimes they have very pretty voices though, so it isn't really a bad thing.)

I don't think the movie was carelessly structured. The writer made good use of reverse dramatic irony, in which the characters know more than you do, which really captivates me. The editing works so you don't really know if Ron Livingston is guilty or not as soon as you press charges (although you want him to be innocent.) Dostoevsky uses the same selective use of omniscience in the Brothers Karamazov for a similar effect (which he was also critisized for, it was very unprecedented, although he was more critisized because it was omniscient and first person.)

Don't get me wrong, Evan Rachel Wood is a brilliant acctress (one of my favs), but I found her voice hard to hear.

Don't watch her guest appearance on True Blood if you think she's brilliant...

Hey kids rock and roll. That's how I lost control...

I agree about Evan Rachel Wood sounding like she had marbles in her mouth. She was a little too low key for this performance and trying to use that "non-affect affect" that so many young girls use. None of that takes away from her acting ability as she is a true talent. Someone just should have advised her to "sing out, Louise".

LOVED her in Once and Again.

Kind of an overshare about your ex, there.

But I agree, it's hard to understand what ERW is saying, especially in the first part of the movie.

reply

I agree about Kimberly's slurring. At first I had a really hard time understanding anything she said. Gradually I got used to it but I still missed a few lines where she sounded like she had a mouthful of oatmeal.

I think Randa's lack of dialogue was in keeping with her character.

reply

haha!
i didnt notice her speech being impaired, but its probably because i had the subtitles on. i always use subtitles or captions.

NOPE!

reply

Wow, I never thought so many people experienced the same thing with the way ERW talked. It was hard to understand what she was saying, definately slur.

AGREED. kim's talking is all slurred and randa...geez, i wished i would jump into that movie and slap her to speak up and LOOK UP FROM THE GROUND FOR GODS SAKE! lol...sorry...got a bit carried away...XD

reply

I thought so too. She slurred and speed talked. Could Evan Rachel Wood be doing this for the role though? I didn't have problem understanding her as Popeye in The Upside of Anger. These are the only two movies of hers I have seen.

reply

Yeah it was hard to understand what she was saying. I thought it was just my bad hearing.
