And the best segments are...

OK, so will all agree that the best segments are "Cousins" and "Cousins?", right?

reply

ya, cousins rocked and i even told a pal bout the segment and she laughed along. And that line,"not tree huggers, leaf people!" or something like that was just one o many, many lol lines in that dialogue. meg was too wooden in my opinion but maybe that scene will grow onto me.thwe others were good too but hands down cousins aced it .
Has any1 seen "blue in the face"? is it good?

reply

1. Cousins?
2. Cousins
3. Delirium
4. Champagne
5. Twins

Those are the only ones that really impressed me... The others were okay... and Meg and Jack's was just so bad. No offence White Stripes, but stick to music please. This movie, though, was great. Taylor Mead is very funny and Cate Blanchett was great. Keep making good movie Mr. Jarmusch.

3. Cousins
4. Somewhere in California
5. Delirium
6. Those Things'll Kill Ya
7. Champaigne
8. No Problem
9. Renée
10. Jack Shows Meg His Tesla Coil
11. Strange to Meet You

The first 5 were simply quality, the last 3 I didn't enjoy overly much. Twins and Cousins? had me chuckling away, they were great

I loved the Iggy Pop/Tom Waits part, it was just so funny. Iggy is so good in it, he surprised me. Because of his reputation, of course. That dispair in his eyes when Tom Waits asks if the drumming on his albums sucks...

There were some other good sketches too, especially Champagne, Strange to Meet You and the Bill Murray part, but I had the feeling they all missed something. Just that tiny bit more, you know? Overall not a bad film, though. Maybe I'll have to see it again some time.

I have to say I was surprised by the Cousins? segment. I nearly shot the water I was drinking through my nose when he said, "I think he prefers the term 'leaf people'."

That said, I found the Cousins segment really interesting as well. It's fun to see how the decorousness of Cate plays against how stripped-down Shelly is.

Most of the other ones were really good, and the only ones I can really say I didn't like were the one with Roberto Benigni and the one with the old guys talking about food.

It was sort of interesting to see a common thread not just with props, but also with things that occur to people throughout the film, like acoustical resonance.

reply

the top three:
1.Cousins?
2.Delirium
3.Jack shows Meg his Tesla Coil

reply

This thread is funny... it just shows that there's no 1 "best" (although "Cousins?" is consistently near the top). I'm surprised people don't seem to like "Strange to Meet You", which had me laughing the hardest. It had the best lines:

ROBERTO: When are you leaving?
STEVEN: The United States?

lol

STEVEN: (spends 2 mins explaining his Indy500 dream theory)
ROBERTO: I do not understand anything you are saying. Ok.

rofl

ROBERTO: Do you know my mother?

lmao!

ROBERTO: Nice to meet you.
STEVEN: Nice to meet you... in a way.

roflmaoooool!!

"Strange to Meet You" definitely. Benigni is the bollocks!

im wit you, the funniest one is with the rza gza and murray

On the first viewing, my favorite was the segment with Tom Waits and Iggy Pop. On repeat viewings, however, I developed a much deeper appreciation for the Two Old Men segment. It's got incredible subtext, and terrific drama.

reply

haha. it had to be done:
1. molina and coogan
2. HELLO, IGGY POP AND TOM WAITS
3. Champagne

reply

i think the best segment is Bill Murray, RZA, and GZA. "Are you a big Bill Murray?", that was awesome.

Iggy Pop was good in his segment as well.

1) RZA, GZA and Bill Murray
2) Two Italian Mobsters and the kid ("Those Things Will Kill Ya")

I REALLY love the Jack and Meg one. It is possible that I am biased because I adore The White Stripes, but I think I would have liked it either way cause it is so funny. I love when Jack is getting all mad cause Meg and that random guy keep making suggestions as to what is wrong with his coil. Then that random guy goes, "You don't have to snap at me". I loved that.

"Champagne" was hysterical. I mean, come one:

-"Here's to Paris in the 20s..."
-"And here's to New York in the seventies...the late seventies."
-"Really? Hmm, okay."

I laughed like a loon for that scene. It was so wonderful.

Molina/Coogan and Bill Murray were the funniest.
And I loved the one with the two old janitors pretending to drink champange.
How many times did those two cats from Wu Tang say Bill Murray?
And Molina and Coogan, great stuff.
Spread the Love...I'm Out...

p.s. this flick could continue on forever. They could have like a Coffee and Ciggarettes channel. Sometimes you watch, or just leave it on as a backdrop at a party, or else unwind and fall asleep to the dull rythms of people drinking coffee and smoking.

reply

Twins and Delirium, but especially Champagne. The Tesla Coil sketch is worth it for the pay-off in the last one. I think Cousins? is alright, but its a little too plot-driven and doesn't really fit in with the rest of the movie.

reply

i like

Cousins

Cousins?

the one with Bill Murray and Wu-Tang

and the first one, with Roberto Benigni

I Agree. My Favourite Is The First Segment With Benigni/Wright; Not Knowing Much About This Film, That Really Made Me Sit Up And Pay Attention... A Sleazy Journalist Chain-Smoker, And An Eccentric Writer.

Class.

I Also Liked Iggy & Bill Murray's Segments.

Fanriffic!

reply

molina and coogan, definitely

reply

i have to say that i really loved the cousins? vignette. i didn't even know who coogan was but he is terrific as the full-of-himself celebrity. however, it is molina -- himself a brilliant actor and quite a presence -- who so convincingly plays himself down that you hardly think it's molina, even if the name is said a hundred times throughout the segment. there's a tinge of poignancy in molina's unabashed enthusiasm for his genealogic find and coogan's unrelenting jadedness in the face of it. it's lovely when molina finally sees coogan what he is and leaves him in the cafe kicking himself.

after this segment, i really liked the one with meg white. again, i did not know who she was, but she has such a wonderfully wry face that i found i could not stop watching her. i also liked that she very breezily solved jack white's mechanical problem.

finally, i'm always crazy about joie lee!

the rest:

9. a three way tie: Renee, Somewhere in California, and Jack Shows Meg His Tesla Coil (I hated all three of them)
