I love this movie, but one scene truly boggles my mind.

In the club shootout scene where Vincent has to kill his target. Fanning finds Max and attempts to escort him out of the club while Vincent is busy killing the bodyguards as well as his target. In my mind I thought, well seems like Max finally gets a break and escapes from Vincent. Then when they finally get out, all of a sudden, bang! Tom Cruise just comes out of no where and kills the cop.

In my mind, I thought, how the **** did Vincent get in front of them so damn fast?! It's like he teleported at the taxi door when Fanning and Max got a head start. Am I the only one who thought this? I honestly thought it was a bit much, like some sort of obvious plot device. I mean, I get that Vincent moves with a purpose and moves aggressively through a crowd, but still....

What do you guys think?

reply

I agree, it's a plot device. There's no way in hell Vincent could have beat them to the taxi, from the situation they were coming out of, that's just not humanly possible. I think it's pretty much the only obvious flaw in this otherwise very well made movie.

reply

@Dude438 Yeah, I knew Vincent was efficient, but that was ridiculous.

reply

I agree. The whole dance club shootout scene from beginning to end is the one thing that prevents this movie from being in my top 25. Another thing I can't forgive is after the first shots ring out and everyone is heading for the door, there is a quick cut 30 seconds later of people still dancing! How the hell did the editor miss that?

reply

What? that was one of the best scenes of the movie. But the people still dancing most likely didn't hear the shots or were too drunk too realize what was going on, that does happen you know.

reply

".. people still dancing most likely didn't hear the shots"

But they hear the guy yelling something like 'FBI!' and other crap. You can't have it both ways. Guns are _EXTREMELY_ loud, every single entity in that club, even the deaf, probably, would've heard (and most likely also seen) the gunshots and people dying.

There's no way anyone would've heard human yelling in that environment, but there's also no way people wouldn't have heard the gunshots.

In the order of loudness, from the most silent to the most loud:

- Yelling
- Rhythmic Vomit with annoying, repetitive scream of nonsensical words (the non-music)
- Zillion of other things
- GUNS

But this movie shows it as completely opposite to reality! Yelling can be heard over loud noisevomit, but guns can't? Holy crap.

reply

agreed. the first 3 hits were done right -- no witnesses, low key, professional. then Vincent heads to a club full of people and starts wasting everyone like he's John Wick? he would never be that careless or clumsy.

reply

True, but it could have been an editing issue. I've lost count of the films I've found where restored footage explains a plot point which earlier made little sense.

All it would have taken is a few seconds of footage explaining how Vincent got there (maybe just giving him more time to make the distance), and often, editing assumes the audience won't notice too much in an action scene.

reply

Yes and no to the editing question.

It's possible that the editing process did cut out a few seconds of them running through a crowded night club, and it was just not done as neatly as it should've been. But I took it another way after re-watching it today.

Fanning and Max go through a back exit that consists of a few smaller rooms, then through a series of crowded stairways: a choke point. After the shooting, Vincent has a lot more open space around him, while Fanning and Max have to squeeze through the panicky crowd. Vincent goes right out the main door and gets to the cab first. It's not totally implausible.

I think this movie was stupid from the opening scene until the end credits, but it looks pretty, Cruise is better than usual and it was exciting enough to keep watching.

However, there are so many coincidences, contrivancies and impossibilities that at some point you just have to stop thinking period and enjoy the movie for what it is.

"Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man..."

reply

That was odd. I also thought Max could have escaped from Vincent easily at that point by just going back into the club.

reply

And then he decides to take the rest of the night off by partying with Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Ron Howard and Samuel L. Jackson. I think it would go a little something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfjtpp90lu8

reply

Definitely. Perfect way to end a stressful evening.

reply

I know this a old post but get a grip. Vincent was a cold blooded assassin. Wether he could do all that damage in the club and make it outside and still double tap that cob doesn’t matter. Mann made him to be that fuckin good through the hole movie. Quit whining and shut ur pea brain down and just enjoy a great fucking movie.

reply

I saw this movie in theaters and on car a couple times but haven't rewatched in years. Looking forward to a rewatch.

reply

Spelling is not your strength. I don't suggest calling someone "pea brain" when you don't know the proper use of "whole".

reply

The guy above who explained how Max & Fanning had to push past a lot of people, which takes time, as Vincent had more space around to move out quickly and beat them to the car is very believable.
