Stop casting rappers!

What could've been a good movie was completely ruined for me by the most unrealistic choice for a chess wizard. Typically, a chess wizard should be a social shut-in, normally an old russian dude or some guy who doesn't do well with others. Not some guy who sings about shakin it like a polaroid picture. I swear so many potentially good movies have been destroyed by casting departments doing favors for rap stars. Stop making me try to believe Andre 3000 can act. Oh yeah, Big Puss doesn't exactly cut it for a quantum physics guy either, but that's another discussion.

Says the guy with "dawg" in his username.

Black people can't be intelligent and sophisticated. Is that what you're saying?

That just sounds... wrong.

reply

Best acting ive seen from a singer almost as good or better than some top rated actors IMO. It was well done for him.

reply

I have to say I have had the same beef for a long time about casting rappers. Where is Mekhi Phifer when you need him?! Andre's performance was about as exciting as a cold cup of coffee, and I've seen middle school theatre students do better line readings than him. Don't even get me started asking where Common and Ice Cube went to acting school! And just what is their acting range...oh, right. They have none. They play themselves. SUCH a challenge.

why mekhi?

reply

André 3000 in Revolver, Ludacris in RocknRolla... looks like Richie insists on casting rappers.

reply

It´s called acting. If you can´t see past a guy being "the one that sings shake it like apolaroid picture" then movies in general are not for you I guess? Jason Stedham is a wealthy man with no hair, yet he plays a crook woth hair in this movie.. can you see past that? O_o

reply

YES LET US PERPETUATE THE STEREOTYPE OF OLD RUSSIANS BEING SAGE MASTERS
AND ALSO MAKE OUR MOVIES FULL OF CLICHES
YES THAT'S THE SOLUTION

reply

Except no? If all you want to do is watch movies filled with stereotypes, you should probably stick to straight action movies. You won't have to stretch your mind to accept the idea of a black chess player or an Italian Quantum Physicist.

All in the name of political correctness, just have to watch the way he "beat" jake with that chessmove, if thats a grandmaster chess player im king kong, hahaha.
id wipe the floor with Avis notion of grandmaster chess play, and certainly wouldnt need a full movie to get to that point.
Only played chess.com for one month and only got up to 1k rating but that move is so easy to see comming for miles away only a blind "played chess for one day" guy would fall for it.
And before you start, my nephew is obsessed with chess has 2k+ rating, does chess tournaments and i beat him. I know how to play, just dont make my life out of it, just saying that a beginners move like that is elevated to "grandmaster" play, it ridicules grandmasters.
But i guess it came from giving up ones queen to mate someone is cool, anyone with a little knowhow of chess wouldnt even let it get this close, or am i seeing this all wrong then maybe i should make a living for playing chess, seriously, the guy has a queen, and tower in one line on king and all he has for defence is a ... horse ? BWAHAHAHAHA

Avi was locked up for several years and had plenty of time on his hands.

Mastering Chess was one of the things he did while incarcerated.

Wich is besides the point, the move used here is a total transparent move, the way its countered even worse.

Which has nothing to do with the actor choice.

reply

It does, its political correctness once again. Black man can make a total newb move in chess and it will be displayed as a grandmaster move and totally be acceptable.
Imagine Anthony Hopkins or someone alike doing this particular move, come read forums then ;)

lol, what? You are reading too much into it. It has nothing to do with race. What you are suggesting implies that the filmmakers deliberately decided to make the black character make a newb move in chess that would only be considered masterful for a black person, basically, suggesting black people can't do more than newb chess moves because they can't be smarter than that. It would also mean the main character is beyond dumb because he even couldn't beat him. It just doesn't make sense they would make a character that is supposedly a grandmaster chess player make newb moves on purpose, so it must've been a goof. They just probably didn't have good enough chess consultants.

reply

Im not gonna believe no one there couldnt play chess and didnt see how rediculous it all was, if an amateur like me can see it already :D
So its there for another reason.

LOL just come out and say it, you don't think black people can play chess.

You say that as if we should somehow be afraid to say it. Most people with education and common sense who aren't brainwashed liberal degenerate freaks would have the same impression until proven wrong. Oh, of course there ARE black who can play, but most of them, especially the American variety, which is the lowest of the low as far as behaviour and intelligence is concerned, most likely cannot.

Nope - not at all. He is alluding to how crazy it is that some people are stupid enough to even think like this. Small, prejudiced minds.

Sadly, there'll always be idiots with computers. Anti-socials who would benefit greatly from playing less Counter-Strike and interacting more with "the real world".

Do us all a favor. Go to a nice park and have some fun with friends. Play some *beep* chess.

Stank ya smelly much!
