This movie sucks
it does, it really does

Gotta love it when a thread ends up straying completely away from the point. I wish that people would just ignore any troll threads. It would clear up a lot of wasted bandwidth on this site.
Good movie, not great movie. It sort of lived up to expectations in one way, and didn't in another. I'll leave it at that.
I'm highly intelligent and smarter than... I'd say 88% of you... and all I can say is this may have been Mr. Penn's greatest effort thus far. America's greatest living actor bar none = Sean Penn!
Great great great flick!
Trolls are both boring & predictable. Never an arguement, whether that be a good or bad one. I really get tiresome of all these boards that are filled with these dumbasses who usually prefer to abuse their caps lock. I can understand your dislike of a certain movie, I actually prefer a good debate/disagreement, but this kind of childish behaviour makes me feel sorry for you. I therefor really hope you're very young of age, let's say up to 12 years or so.
share*beep* republicans
i loved this movie
I totally agree that this movie sucked. I was really looking forward to having some fun with my friends when we went to see it on my b-day and it totally ruined my day. The plot was jumpy (too much so to be "artsy") and hard to follow. He acts like he is the only person getting screwed over in this nation, but as a 19-year-old college student I have been screwed over more times than I can count and know that I'm not alone...it happens to EVERYONE! The part where he shoots the dog was completely unnecessary too, there was no point in it. I would never recommend this movie to anyone and actually have told people NOT to watch it. And this has nothing to do with me being a republican, thank you Brothafromanothamotha. Just cuz I voted for Bush doesn't make any difference on how much this movie sucked. I thought it blew chunks and there is no way I'll change my opinion on this.
shareI have been out of the country for about 11 years now though manage to keep up on movies and US popular culture. I am mainly responding to register my horror at the lack of coherence, reasoning, and articulation presented in many of the posts.
I hope you realize that no serious person would even consider responding to such slop in any place other than a free discussion board on the net.
Have a little pride in yourselves and think through an argument at least. There is never going to be a total agreement when it comes to such subjective topics as taste in movies. What seems more important here is the ability to coherently present your point of view. "This movie totally sucks" its "boring" etc... doesn't convey any real information except that you didn't take the time to think through any of the material which was presented to you... i.e. YOU wasted YOUR OWN TIME by not thinking about what you were watching and then being able to express what you liked or disliked about it.
Everything can be critiqued and analyzed but it requires a bit of thought, planning and organization. I get "s..t" all the time about dumb Americans where I live and argue that it is not true... however going by alot of the posts on this board its a hard arguement to justify.
"The part where he shoots the dog was completely unnecessary too, there was no point in it. I would never recommend this movie to anyone and actually have told people NOT to watch it. Actually shooting the dog did have a point. I doubt Sam ever killed a living thing, and he thought he would either kill people when he flew into the white house, or at least kill people on the plane, while hijacking it. He had to prepare for those actions.
And you voting for Bush DOESN"T have anything to do with your opinion on this film. It just means that you're a *beep* moron.
haha too right (re: bush).
I really didn't think this movie sucked at all. I can understand why some may not like it due to their political views, but it as an item of film making, you have to admire its composition. In that context, it far from sucks.
I actually quite enjoyed this film, its not one of my favourites, and although I own it, its not a film I will watch again for a while, as I don't - personally - feel that it is a film that you can watch time and time again.
I'm not usually a big fan of Sean Penn, I don't dislike him overly, but it just often takes me a while to get used to his acting style, he did a great job on this though, and I feel that Naomi Watts (someone who I hadn't actually heard of before - I've not seen King Kong), put on a great performance.
But on a different note, if you have a valuable point to make about a film, even if its against the film, then creating a topic with the title you have, is hardly going to make people respect your opinion. Just a bit of advice dude
I think he shot the dog because it was his dog and they made him leave it. Geez I'm glad the kids weren't home. They made quite a point of showing how much he loved the dog throughout the movie. It shows how completely bonkers he went.
shareThe film was simply horribly stupid. It had no redeeming value. This guy was supposed to be in sales? Are you kidding? He's totally incompetent. Sean Penn is one of the biggest jackasses on the planet.
--------------------------------------
America put the "fun" back into "Fundamentalism".
Okay...here's my measly two cents
First I did think Sean Penn's performance was a little over the top. He did a good job, but honestly he didn't seem crazy, he seemed midly mentally retarded. Maybe that was the writer's intention. If so he did a great job. I will say this about his performance...I do believe the writer intended the audience to feel incredibly uncomfortable with this character.
All of the acting in this movie was otherwise supurb.
I have to disagree that this movie was simply an indictment of Richard Nixon. I felt the movie was about any regular humans struggle with the stress of being less than the "American Ideal". The reason the movie is poignant is it resonates with how many people feel when they are powerless to maintain their dignity and integrity.
I found it most interesting that he was so upset about the lies people told to get ahead, but he also lied and stole. This was a very intriguing aspect of the character.
To those of you who say you hated this film because it was boring....CHALLENGE YOURSELF A LITTLE. It won't kill you to watch a movie you don't enjoy, so long as it challenges you in some way to think outside the box.
By the way, I am a republican.
Somehow, I still find a way to maintain an open mind and enjoy movies that aren't starring Arnold. LMAO. Geez people be a little more open minded.
For anyone's reading (anyone who's out there for your eye's only) :
THIS IS AN URGENT SITUATION; A WORST CASE SENARIO strictly hypothetical senario, but could happen, hope not! :
When you take the needles away from a heroine addict and offer them a plate of broccoli and egg whites, with spinach, it’s only natural that they will throw up as if they were given poison – the same is true for the crack head contingent.
Just like the substance known as heroine, and that of crack has brainwashed the person/the addict, the culture of perpetual, instantaneous, gratification of the most lurid abase denominator, has brainwashed the so called ‘Bottom Line crowd’. So swathed in this vice-like grip perpetuated for years by nihilistic producers, these wretched folk (swelling turgid in size and girth across a planet called earth – hope you like that one) they no longer know their right hand from their left foot, let alone what is good to eat.
Its not that people no longer want anything good or decent, or that they have become anti-quality, they no longer can tell the differenced, so programmed by the shadow of sewage that is being pumped in to peoples skulls a 101 miles an hour all across the earth, IN ONE EAR AND OUT THE OTHER.
They want continuous gratification of the vilest order, live and direct from Disney Land. The most ruthless purveyors and panderers of this Crystal meth-like poison will have people dressed like Mickey and Minnie Mouse handing out candy covered crack-rocks, in their desperate efforts to PLEASE THE BOTTOM-LINE CROWD. Along with powdered heroine and crystal-meth-flecked candy floss to keep this baying crowd happy in order to avoid a stampede of rioting headless addicts (to say mindless would be an understatement of the situation): the dealers of this drug threaten to create a STAMPEDE OF GRATIFICATION LEPERS out of considerate minded people.
Once the crowd have gorged and glutted themselves on this baleful banquet, the brainwashers have cinemas set up like massage parlours to gratify, as one urge leads to another.
With this brainwashing and programming complete this Borg-like legion is then sent out to assimilate all other opinions in favour of basement and sewer style quality films.
I don’t want to assimilate any one to my opinion, because opinions are not the truth just 6 billion different versions of it going round and round like planet earth or like a spinning top which must fall to the ground at some point. No I want films, especially ones of such brilliance like A History Of Violence to represent themselves rather than be represented by morbidly disproportionate, unbalanced, loaded and biased opinions. Whether these biased thoughts come from people who get paid for their baseless opinions or from people who don’t!!!
When the audiences sensibilities are so brutally desensitized by the pap they've forced down their throats, so numbed by the onslaught of the bottom line marketing criteria, all satisfaction from any form of media will be ineffectual, and people will only find 'entertainment ' form being shot of cannons at the carnie, whilst dressed in clown costumes - at only 50 cents a pop.
[There will be a choice of normal clown attire or the crusty the clown look alike wear].
And finally, when the audiences sensibilities and that of the entire planet have succumbed to the bottom-line pap that the anti-quality crowd crave unconditionally the only 'entertainment' that people will find satisfying will be dressing up in clown costumes and re-enacting scenes from BUM-FIGHTS, then re-enacting the final days and last performance of GG Allin and his band The MURDER JUNKIES, playing at The Gas Station. It could become a world wide Phenomenon!
Envision this becoming so severe that the planet slowly or quickly becomes infested with headless soul-sucking zombies running rampant as they gratify themselves in unmentionable ways, relentlessly and incessantly, in their thirsty hunt for vile sensations.
Envision whole planets swallowed up as it spreads like a phage from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy, and then universe to universe. Folks untouched by this inter-universe pandemic will have to flee in what ever vehicle they can find and be selective about other universe’s that they decide to plant their house, as many may have already succumbed to this pandemic. The search for New Worlds will be treacherous, but one must overcome and find solace!
These addicts have made a hole in the Hull, the ship is sinking faster than the Titanic, this is not the time for talking or rude speeches, but the time to find life boats and pursue better ground.
The Assassination of Richard Nixon is part of the neo-renaissance in cinema, just like that of the 1970’s.
Better to keep hooker sex in a motel bedroom and substance on the screen.

How sad it is, for once there is a remarkable movie of U.S. soil, some (American) posters feel so disgusted by the questions raised in this movie -basically the questioning of The American Dream- all they can state is 'this movie sucks'.
This movie does a great job in portraying in an acceptable way, an ordinary Joe character who tries and fails to escape a horrible lifestyle: it is to feel accomplishment basically by selling people illusions rather than a product. From a European point of view this has always been the problem with the imported American culture: each product needs masses of marketing and commercials in order for it to sell.
Clearly Sam descends into psychological hell because his questioning of the american society leads only to him being the outcast, although his questioning is ethically correct: is it an accomplishment to rip of consumers, to state that your profit margin is such and such, while it is clear that the consumer is being fooled psychologically. Richard Nixon is a great metaphor of betrayal: on both his election campaigns he deliberately and succesfully lied to the voters, only later to be dismissed. Nixon was a symbol that 'the most powerful man in the world', democratically elected was not a honest man.
In Europe, this movie has been hailed by the critics as one of the most important U.S. films being made in the last years. No, it's not flashy, no, it's not action packed, but it is a major work of art. It's a movie of which the main object is to be more than popcorn entertainment, raising important questions about the psychological effects of the american lifestyle.
If cinema wants to be art, 'The Assassination Of Richard Nixon' is a worthy contender.
Thanks for the European point of view. Of course you are correct in just about everything you say. The only thing I would add from this side of the Atlantic is that there are a lot of Americans who also understand what you say about the society we live in. And even though the film didn't do great business theatrically in the US, the dvd did very good business from what I read on this site. So the film has found an audience here too. It is a work of art so of course it's not going to get the attention that a popcorn movie does. But it will be around for a loooonnnnng time and I suspect people will be watching this film for years to come. Thanks for your insightful and articulate commentary. What country are you in in Europe? Did you see the film in the theater or rent it?
shareWhat really sucks: Oneliners like the one nationalegla posted in the beginning of this thread.
sharei actually really liked this movie.
great camera work and the script was pretty good.

"I believe that movies should be entertaining, at least in some way."
I hear what you say about movies but what about films, AORN is not a movie, x-men 3 is a movie (with filmic flavour).
I think that films should be engaging, mental, cerebral and visceral ecstasy( and I don’t mean the amphetamine, I mean naturally dugs is artificial stuff)
Look at Collateral or Down in the Valley, or Chopper.
There are good examples of films that bridge the Film Movie divide but few directors are bothered about the discipline it requires.
Good examples:
Terminator 1
Chopper
Once were warriors
Fearless
Hayley Stark says, "Sweets for everyone."
The Assassination of Richard Nixon is a great film and better than all the films mentioned by Greek Isle:
Terminator 1
Chopper
Once were warriors
Fearless
It's a much more entertaining, prococative film. Period. End of story. Penn is the best!!!1

Question to refeerf
HAVE YOU SEEN ONCE WERE WARRIORS?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110729/
If you had I don't think you would say what you said.
Classic IMDB tactics deliberately miss the point of the poster in order to bolster your aurgument, or position.
Other films I mentioned were to make a point of mkaing people away of films that tend to be free of detractors.
On twisting my words as if I were to mean that those films were better than AORN
WHY DO THAT refeerf.
I DEVOTED AN ENTIRE MINI ESSAY TO EXPLAINING TO PEOPLE WHAT A GREAT FILM AORN WAS
AGAIN WHY TWIST MY WORDS IS KUDOS ALL THATS IMPORTANT TO YOU SO MUCH SO THAT YOU MISS THE POINT - THAT WASN'T THAT SUBTLE - THAT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE.
These were just examples:
here EXAMPLES EXAMPLES EXAMPLES EXAMPLES JUST EXAMPLES:

Please don't!
Every where I go RAAAAAAAge RAAAAAge, I get on the streets RAAAAGe, I get on the IMDB RAAAAAAAGE, I talk to people here RAAAAAAGe. I'm so enraged I'm going to have to go on more missions all over the IMDB just to vent my rage, starting here!!!!!! Next the Irreversible Board to find Godeadman and ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK!!!!!! NEVER SUURENDER NEVER
"One must count one oneself, nobody esle"
Rena Owen gave one of the best performances ever,
Her perfromance was so unfairly slighted by the Oscar fraternity!
Her performance was one that came from true grit!
It was a performance that will stand as testement to the titanic stmbling struggle that women have to face in ABUSIVE REALTIONSIPS WITH PERPETUALLY VIOLENT HUSBANDS.
And you rubbish it!
The film with bold grit deliniated the struggle that the child casualties of this vile chaos that ensues terminally within families all over the world.
This vile struggle goes on perpetually and you rubbish it!
This film deliniated the struggle that plagues the children in such quagmires, and how it damges them mentally and physically, and you RUBBISH IT JUST TO PROVE YOUR PRECIOUS POINT JUST FOR KUDOS AND EGO.
You may love Assasination of R... but you obviously don't appreciate its message.
Once Were Warriors so clearly exposese the catastrphic consequences that violence in the family as well as the damage compounded by environment , the ghetto of New Zealand. But I suppose those parts of town mean nothing to you, all safe and sound, where you can hunt for more Kudos.
ONCE WERE WARRORS AND ASSASINATION OF RICAHRD NIXON ARE NOT FILMS THAT I WOULD PTIT ONE AGAINTS THE OTHER LIKE SOME KIND OF PATHETIC HORSE RACE AS IF YOU WERE PLACING BETS BAYING FOR ONE TO WIN OVER THE OTHER LIKE SOME PACK OF DRUNKEN GAMBLERS AT A HORSE RACING TRACK.
WHY DO IT.
AGIN WHY LOVE A FILM AND NOT UNDERSTAND ITS MESSAGE WHERE YOU CAN USE IT IN LIFE TO PREVENT YOU FROM JUST BEING PETTY AND EGOTISITICAL.
DO YOU FEEL GOOD THAT YOU TWISTED MY WORDS TO MAKE YOURSELF FEEL ALL INFLATED INSIDE TO GET MORE KUDOS FORM OTHER POSTERS.
RENA OWEN GAVE A PEROFORMANCE ON A PAR MAYBE EVEN MORE INTENSE THAN CHALIZE THERON IN MOOOOOONSTERR AND SHE WAS LUCKY TO GET AN OSCAR AS USUALLY THEY JUST IGNOR WOMEN IN FILMS.
But that woudln't mean anything to you becasue KUDOS IS ALL YOU CARE ABOUT. I try when ever I can to maje sure people are aware of ONCE WERE WARRIOES AND I'M NOT GOIN GTO LET SOME KUDOS HUNGRY IMDB EGOTISM PUT ONE SHRED OF SLIGHT NOT ONE BESHMIOK ON THE HAIR OF THAT FILM.
I SEE THEAT FILM IN MY MIND, I WACTH THAT FILM IN MY MIND HAVE DONE FOR YEARS WHEN I AM NOT WATCHING IT!!!!
SO

Greek, I don't think Reefer was saying anything to have gotten your goat. I think he/she just was arguing that he/she thinks your example film/movies are lesser works than Assassination. I didn't get the feeling Reefer's original post (after reading your post too) was an attack on you, just another point of view in regards to the films you mentioned.
But very interesting discussion and I am going to check out some of the films you mentioned that I havent' seen. Thanks.
I see what your saying to me n146618, and I have no truck with you, not at all But I wasn't even remotely comparing those films to A.O.R.N I spent hours and hours trying to calm down and I'm sick with it, still sick with rage.
They were a seperate issue from the A O R . N body of my post, they were examples of films that I rarely have to defend on the IMDB agsint the ignorance and small mindedness.
Those two refeer and proffessor pretzel want to turn ONE Of THE GREATEST FAMILY AND RELATIONSHIP DRAMAS EVER MADE ON THE ENTIRE EARTH, ALONG WITH NIL BY MOUTH, THEY WANT TO TURN IT IN TO A HORSE AND ON TOP OF THAT TURN SEAN PENN'S FINEST PERFORMANCE SINCE MYSTIC RIVER IN TO A HORSE AND THEN PIT ONE AGAINT THE OTHER.
tHEY WAN TO LAY BETS AND GOAD EACH HORSE ON IF THEY THINK THEY AREW GOING DO THAT ANY FORUM ON THIS PLANET THEN KNOW THAT I AM MAKING SNACKS ITS GOING TO BE A LONG WEEK!
MAYBE MONTH, OR EVEN MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
once I spent 5 solid months on these boards with VIRTUALLY THE WHOLE PLANET AGAISNT ME WITH SMALL MINDEDNESS AND IGNORANCE, TIME MEANS NOTHING TO ME!!!!!
I'LL WRITE ESSAYS WITH ONLY MY LEFT HAND WHILE USING MY OTHER HAND TO EAT.
ONCE WERE WARRIORS One of the few films to delineate the squalid plight of The Maouri People of New Zealand , a displaced and dissenfranchised people, wher alcholism is rife, and domsetic violence rife, denigration of women a hidden probelm. Just look at the attitude gangs like The Mongrel Mob have towards women.
The gangs in Once WERE WARRIORS ALSO SHOW HOW YOUNG KIDS FEEL THEIR CHOICE SO NARROW THAT THEY HAVE TO JOIN THESE GANGS AND USE THEM AS SUSBSTITUTE FAMILY.
NO WAY AM I GOIGN TO LET SOEMONE DENIGRATE THIS FILM JUST FOR THEIR IMDB KUDOS!!!!
