Mostly an absolutely bonkers, all-in performance by Korean actor Choi Min-Sik. Also some "smart" (albeit bordering on smarting-pants...) editing and shot composition with clever transitions and showy single takes, and excellent first 30 minutes.
It's also quite confused thematically speaking, tone death when it comes to the relationship dynamics between the main protagonists, and way to showy in its mise-en-scène. Also, very violent (but not necessarily a flaw, to each his own).
I used to adore this film as a young adult, saw it a good dozen times, and now it both annoys and bores me to death.
That crazy Choi Min-Sik performance though....
