I wont lie, I don't like country music nor am I into the history of this stuff in general. Its a little dated for me and it shows. In the 1950's this may have been Rock N' Roll but not by today's standards (its more country now). That doesn't mean the music still isn't good and I actually like it BUT only when Joaquin sings it. I didn't really get into Johnny Cash's sound before I saw this movie and I think Joaquin sings it better than Johnny did. As an actor he emphasizes on the lyrics and is more interactive than Johnny. I could see me listening to these songs but only off the movie soundtrack. What do you guys think?

Totally agree, I actually listened to the soundtrack on Spotify already while I didn't really like the original songs

I disagree. Though Joaquin did an excellent job singing, I'll take Johnny every time. He was unique.

Same here. Johnny Cash is amazing and Joaquin did a wonderful job playing him but no one can top Johnny. I grew up hearing him on The Muppetts plus my dad often played his records. I found Boy Named Sue very funny. But I wasn’t a big fan till I heard his gospel music. Then I saw him on Dr. Quinn. This after he died. I then started listening to his too hits can become a big fan.

Go listen to the unedited versions of Live at Folsom and then decide. To me, they're the perfect example of Cash singing his best songs, the way that he intended them to be sing: raw and filter free. Kinda like the way he would sing them if he lie dying in a ditch on the side of the road and just had time to sing one song...

Did Joaquin Phoenix sing Folsom Prison Blues in the film? Maybe I missed it.

Joaquin did a decent job with the songs in the movie but he can't touch the original. I think alot of it depends on the era you grew up in. Younger people would tend to like the movie renditions more if they hadn't heard the originals first.

The originals are great, but I’m obsessed with the movie versions—especially It Ain’t Me Babe and of course Walk the Line.

How can someone who's imitating another artist sound better than the real thing? I can see the appeal for young people of more modern-sounding recordings, though.
