Why does Kirsten Dunst ruin every potentially excellent movie that she's in? Aargh. She's incredibly annoying and same same in every single movie that I've seen her in. I will watch this but I will remove my glasses and block my ears whenever she come on screen or speaks. I will not have another viewing experience ruined. I was really looking forward to seeing n The Road until I saw her name in the credits.
A cannes award does mean something IMO ,at least it means more to me then an oscar. true masters of cinema got several cannes awards with good reason but were completely ignored by the oscars. Oscars are only given to hollywood movies with a few exceptions
btw: i am not claiming that Steward got an award there.
Cannes Award mean something when Oscars do not? Um, no, both have missed lots of great movies and true masters of the cinema alike. They mean just the same.
I think we all know which movies Oscar missed, so I'm not going to bother going there. It's a popular topic anyway.
And while it's true more deserving people have won in Cannes, don't forget Cannes, just like Oscar, also completely ignored Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Krzystof Kieslowski, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Robert Bresson, Louis Malle, Majid Majidi, Hiroshi Teshigahara, Andrei Tarkovski, Christopher Nolan, Bob Clark, John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, Masaki Kobayashi, Kaneto Shindo, Larisa Shepitko, Dario Argento, Sidney Lumet, Satyajit Ray, Mario Bava, Zhang Yimou, Sergio Leone, Jean Renoir, and Ridley Scott.
And at least Oscar actually bothered to give Steven Spielberg, Ingmar Bergman, Jacques Tati, Hayao Miyazaki, Bertrand Blier, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Jiri Menzel, Ang Lee,Coasta-Gavras, Giuseppe Tornatore, and Pedro Almodovar, by giving their movies "Best Foreign Language" Oscar (except for Miyazaki who won Best Animated feature Oscar, Almodovar who won Best Writer At Original Screenplay Oscar, and Lee & Spielberg who won Best Director Oscar) whereas Cannes didn't even bother looking at them.
And just like Best Picture Oscar, Palme d'Or pretty much got the wrong winner almost every year, for example:
1939: The Rules of The Game should have won but wasn't even nominated. 1946: Dead of Night or The Children of Paradise should have won. 1951: Strangers On A Train or A Streetcar Named Desire should have won. 1954: Seven Samurai or Rear Window should have won. 1955: Pather Pancali should have won. 1956: A Man Escaped should have won. 1957: 12 Angry Men or The Seventh Seal should have won. 1958: Vertigo or Elevator To The Gallows or Ashes & Diamonds or Mon Oncle should have won. 1961: The Innocents should have won. 1963: 8 1/2 or The Haunting should have won. 1964: Band of Outsiders or Woman In The Dunes or Onibaba should have won. 1965: For A Few Dollars More should have won. 1966: Persona or Closely Watched Trains or The Battle of Algiers or Andrei Rublev or The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly should have won. 1971: A Clockwork Orange should have won. 1972: The Godfather should have won. 1973: Amarcord or Spirit of The Beehive should have won. 1975: Jaws or Monthy Python & The Holy Grail or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest should have won. 1978: Dawn of The Dead or Days of Heaven or The Deer Hunter or Autumn Sonata or Halloween should have won. 1985: Brazil should have won. 1986: Stand By Me or Platoon or Manon des Sources or Castle In The Sky or Offret should have won. 1987: Au revoir les enfants should have won. 1988: Cinema Paradiso or Tonari no Totoro should have won. 1989: A Short Film About Killing or Interrogation or The Killer should have won. 1990: Goodfellas or Close-Up or Edward Scissorhands should have won. 1991: Delicatessen should have won. 1992: Reservoir Dogs should have won. 1998: The Truman Show or Central Station should have won. 1999: The Green Mile or The Insider or All About My Mother should have won. 2000: Memento or The Gladiator should have won. 2001: Amélie should have won. 2002: City of God or Talk To Her should have won. 2003: Oldboy should have won. 2004: Der Untergang or Million Dollar Baby should have won. 2005: Capote or The Secret Life of Words should have won. 2006: The Lives of Others should have won. 2007: No Country For Old Men or There Will Be Blood should have won. 2008: Wall-E should have won. 2009: 3 Idiots should have won. 2010: Confessions should have won. 2011: Drive should have won.
See? Cannes & Oscars are alike for most part, they got many things right but they also got many things wrong.
If there's one credit I could give to Cannes but not to Oscar is Cannes mostly got The Best Actor winner right, but not the best Actress winner apparently. Especially in the last 20 years, many Oscar & Cannes best actress winners are a big joke.
But, yes, if Oscar is USA's most supreme award in film-making, Cannes is Europe's. They mean the same. They are at the same level of prestigiousness.

Most of them either won or were nominated for awards at Cannes. i actually did some research that took me one and a half hour and i was almost ready to post in detail how many awards those guys won that you mention.. when my computer restarted so i am not doing that again... Some of those people that were suposed to be ignored by Cannes like Tarkovsky had as many as 11 nominations and won 7 awards at Cannes while in hollywood he got nothing ,nobody even mentions him. Scorsese is probably the only person in hollywood who has seen tarkovsky movies and respects his unique quality. Scorsese has an enclopedia of movie history in his head

Did you actually see the movies that won the Palm d'Or during those years it has been awarded? If you like artistic movies that may not be mainstream you may begin to understand why those won and not those on your list.
In Cannes its all about the craft ,for examply you say that Drive should have won in 2011... What is so special about Drive... there is nothing unique about Drive ,its something i have seen before. Now compare Drive with The Tree Of Life the movie that actually won the Palm d'Or in 2011...
But, yes, if Oscar is USA's most supreme award in film-making, Cannes is Europe's. They mean the same. They are at the same level of prestigiousness.
No the oscars only have the forein language award on the other hand Cannes does not discriminate it nominates movies from all over the world including the states.

Tarkosvki never won the Palm d'Or, he only won the lower rated awards at Cannes. That's the same as not recognizing him. We're talking about the highest award winners here.
And regarding Scorsese, I don't doubt that. Casino remains one of the greatest movies I have ever seen in my life.

"Cannes film Festival didn't exist in 1939"
--------------
It did. Union Pacific by DeMille won. I haven't seen it, but I have a hard time believing it's better than The Rules of The Game.
=====================
"The Palm d'Or wasn't introduced until 1955"
---------------------
Doesn't mean the movies I listed couldn't have won the highest award available during that timeline, Grand Prix du Festival International du Film.

Again, doesn't mean the movies I listed couldn't have won the highest award available during that timeline, Grand Prix du Festival.

While I admit I haven't seen all the movies that won Palm d'Or at Cannes (though of course I've seen most of them), I think I wouldn't have picked out titles like Dead of Night, The Innocents, The Haunting, Onibaba, Persona, Spirit of The Beehive, Brazil, Close-Up, Delicatessen, The Truman Show, Talk To Her, Oldboy, Der Untergang, and The Lives of Others if I'm unaware of arthouse movies.
And just because it's mainstream doesn't mean it cannot be artsy. The Godfather & Memento proved that.

Conflict about the loss of a child has also been done before.
And it doesn't have to be Drive, even A Separation would have been a better winner. But I don't even know if it was nominated.

"No the oscars only have the foreign language award on the other hand Cannes does not discriminate it nominates movies from all over the world including the states."

You do know many non-US movies have won Oscars other than Best Foreign Language Oscar, right?
======================
I hope I don't sound offensive, I was just trying to say that Cannes & Oscars are the same despite of their reach. I mean, I consider Amélie to be my favorite movie and so far the best movie I've ever seen in my life, but I don't remember it winning at the Oscar & Cannes, so to me, at least, that means awards, while fanciful, eventually does not determine which is good and which is not.
Tarkosvki never won the Palm d'Or, he only won the lower rated awards at Cannes. That's the same as not recognizing him. We're talking about the highest award winners here.
so winning awards at Cannes doesn't mean anything "to you" unless its the Palm ,you must be from a different planet. You are not the runner up when you win one of the other awards ,its not a top ten. Every award is given for different reasons.
Just because the news only reports on the Palm d'Or doesn't automatically mean that thats the only award that matters.

The Palm was given to movies the last 16 years to movies that i personally agree with and think that those were the best movies with the exception of 2010 nobody knew what happened there. The movies that you list are not that special with the exclusion of Persona which is one of the best movies ever made.
Conflict about the loss of a child has also been done before.

Better then The Tree Of Life... If you say that Drive is a better movie then the Tree Of Life you simply have no taste.
Naming another example doesn't help ,i am talking about the way it was made.
You do know many non-US movies have won Oscars other than Best Foreign Language Oscar, right?
Other then spanish speaking or from the UK ,sure... allot... it happens every year ;)
I didn't know that Cannes Film Festival existed before 1939 ,can you provide a link for me... i couldn't find that info anywhere
No i am not offended by your opinion. Cannes simply means allot more to me then the oscars ,like i said you get an oscar when its your time to get one and you get an award at Cannes because you deserve it... and oscars are limited to hollywood and Cannes nominates movies from all over the world.
I don't hate the Oscars ,i see it every year in february and i watch every nominated movie.

The fact stands that Palm is the highest award of Cannes. And when you receive Gran Prix, that means you're second best. so, yes, there's ranking in Cannes.

Well, I think Cannes gave away the Palm d'Or to the wrong winner almost every year, so the 2010 winner was no surprise to me, really.

Wow, you just mocked Dead of Night, The Innocents, The Haunting, Onibaba, Spirit of The Beehive, Brazil, Close-Up, Delicatessen, The Truman Show, Talk To Her, Oldboy, Der Untergang, and The Lives of Others as "not that special" and later you call me tasteless cause I think Drive is better than Tree of Life?
Look who's talking, dude.

Oh, well, it's your right if you wanna believe that. I still think Oscar & Cannes are one and the same.
She's only as good as the role she's in. I thought Kristin Stewart would ruin this movie, but so far the trailer looks like she's actually showing some emotion, so I might give her the benefit of the doubt. You should do the same.
Dunst does not ruin everything. Sheesh. Have you seen Melancholia? Awards over here in the states mean nothing, but winning the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival is a HUGE accomplishment. I bet the only films you've seen her in are Spider-Man and Bring It On.
Some actors get worse as they get older. I think they begin to lose that naturalness and become stiff and self-conscious. I never liked Dennis Hopper for that reason. Never knew what to do with his arms. Kirsten Dunst seems sort of self-conscious. But that doesn't forgive her. I pay to see people act well, not half arsed.
Well, she doesn't usually ruin things single-handedly, I'll give her that (kudos also go to Sofia Coppola and Cameron Crowe). And she didn't ruin Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - just half ruined every scene she was in. So maybe On The Road won't be so bad. Does she have any lines in this movie? I can half bear her if she doesn't speak.
Why would I waste my time with Bring It on?
And why would I waste my time on Melancholia after Marie Antoinette, Virgin Suicides, and Elizabethtown? Fool me once or twice, shame on you, Kirsten Dunst. Fool me 6 or 7 times, shame on me! If she can't hold her own as a supporting actress why would I give her another chance to ruin a film as the lead actress?
I'll be surprised if any of you see this movie think Dunst is anything other than gawd-awful. She said in the Cannes presser that she shot all her scenes in 3 days, and it looks like it. I'm sorry to say, but she comes across in this like a first-year acting student. She's just bad. I was cringing during her scenes and embarrassed to be in front of the screen.
I hate to break it to you Viva; but Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst...are actually two different people. Kirsten Dunst is the blond one who can actually act..this thread is about her.
"IMdB; where 14 year olds can act like jaded 40 year old critics...'
I haven't seen anything that Kristen Dunst has single-handedly ruined. In fact, she's one of my favorite young actresses. Even a less critically acclaimed movie, like Crazy Beautiful, showcases how talented she is. She can evoke so many emotions just with a single look. She's not afraid to be completely vulnerable, raw, without make-up, exposed, etc. She is a very good actress.
“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Mother Teresa
You can call that woman dumb, if you'd like. But, I don't think it's unusual to expect a man to "grow up" when he has children and a family to support. I don't think she ever expected him to be normal, per se. She knew who and what he was. I suppose she thought that he would be a little less selfish and restless and much more discreet.
“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” Mother Teresa
No, not all women do. There is an expectation of increased maturity coming with age and responsibility. But to expect someone to take that large a leap is naive and dumb.
I'm not sure if it's Kirsten Dunst herself or the characters that she play.
I really hated her character in Melancholia In this movie she plays another sulking whore. Slightly less of a sulking whore than in Melancholia. I hate depressed crazy bitches, constantly desirous of your attention.
I consider myself at least a somewhat sophisticated viewer of good film, and I hate her too. I think she brings nothing to her films. Havent seen Meloncholia yet though, which I look forward to changing my opinion if she is in fact good.
