shareThe magic of this movie is in the sets and cinematography. It's like stepping into a Vermeer painting and walking around. When you see Vermeer's compositions set up in situ and Colin Firth as Vermeer painting them, it brings these iconic images into a context that reminds you that they were painted by an artist striving for perfection, and not by a god.
And FURTHERMORE, this is my signature! SERIOUSLY! Did you think I was still talking about my point?
Because unlike you, many people are interested in art. The real question is, why did you watch a movie about the creation of a famous painting if you AREN'T interested in art?
shareBoring, no. Compelling, yes. What kept me focused was the almost constant sense of menace. I haven't read the book, but if we take the movie as a movie, Griet is at the mercy of a collection of privileged, self-absorbed characters, most of whom want to do her ill in one way or another. She's insightful and intelligent; she's brave. She looks into the maw of various vices and is both hypnotized and repelled by it. I'm a man in my seventies, and this film gave me as good a view as I've ever had of the helplessness of a young girl caught between lust, genius, jealousy, insecurity, and malice. It's hard to look at and impossible to look away from.
shareWhy do they make any movie? I loved the movie. Others may not. It's part of life.
shareI too loved this movie and have seen it three or four times. Each time I am amazed at the acting between Johansson and Firth which may have been subtle but was nevertheless intense. The direction, cinematography, especially the lighting, the costumes, scenery, etc. were all excellent.
The other actors were amazing as well especially Essie Davis (who I hardly recognized) and Tom Wilkinson.
There was nothing I disliked about this movie. I absolutely loved it!
Different strokes for different folks, OP. I've seen this film a dozen times and never get tired of seeing it. Colin Firth is HOT! Great story, great acting, great piece of history.
