So good it was hard to believe it was an HBO series
I am thankful HBO gave the series the opportunity to exist period, but Carnivale compared to other HBO series is like comparing "The Godfather" to "Transformers".

shareCarnivale's definitely one of the best but HBO still has some good shows.
shareNot so much anymore. Their classics are behind them.
share"Boardwalk Empire" is going to restore the HBO glory of the early 2000's.
shareHa! A season in and it hasn't been what most people were expecting. Game of Thrones is pretty up there though.
shareQUALITY! Glueing non-tv people back to the box!
shareBoredwalk Empire is sort of a big fat nothing.
SIX FEET UNDER is hbo's jewel.

Which shows are you refering to MothPriest?
I agree that "Carnivale" is the best of the HBO shows but it is my favorite show anyways so that isn't saying much.
I really enjoy some non-HBO shows like "Twin Peaks", "Firefly", "Farscape", "Babylon 5", "Star Trek: Enterprise", "Lost" but HBO made many great shows:
- Carnivale
- Six Feet Under
- The Sopranos
- The Wire
- Rome
- Deadwood
Carnivale certainly ended up having a shared destiny with "Twin Peaks". Both shows were only two seasons long and have strong cult followings. Pertaining to other HBO series, I thought the first season of "Deadwood" was well put together, but started to lag thereafter.
shareThe second season of Deadwood definitely lagged due to its lack of Swearengen but I thought it really picked up with the third season. It sucks that it ended where it did though.
shareCarnivale was an absolute treasure and it makes me so sad that HBO didn't allow the show to go on. You just don't find quality shows like Carnivale that literally have it all. I still miss it and have to watch seasons one and two to get my Carnivale fix.

I don't understand what the OP is saying, usually when i see that something has been made by HBO then I know it will be fantastic, which is why I watch it. I live in the UK, so I may only have seen the better shows on the Channel, but while a lot of cr*p american TV ends up on in the uk, it's never from HBO.
The shows I've seen from HBO are:
Oz
The Wire,
Deadwood,
Carnivale,
Rome,
Six Feet Under.
I think they're all brilliant programmes.
Sex and the City is worth mentioning too--a lot of people hate it, but it's a well made show which was incredibly well recieved. I'm pretty indifferent to that one.
The Wire - Best drama ever.
Carnivale - Would've been the best drama ever had it been allowed to finish.
Boardwalk Empire - The next great HBO show?
And speaking of cable networks with awesome original programming. AMC seems to be the go to network. Both Mad Men and Breaking Bad are Hall of Famers in their own right.
"Boardwalk Empire" is set at the very beginning of the Roaring Twenties. If it at least has some level of historical accuracy does interesting things with well known names like Capone and Lucky Luciano, then it could be something special. Buscemi in a lead role is a great idea, and I just hope that Scorsese and the writers are up for the task, because this could easily be a classic.
shareBreaking Bad & DS9 are amazing non-HBO shows as well.
But Game of Thrones & OZ are phenomenal HBO shows, I wish they had stuck with Carnivale.

We don't get a wide selection of American TV here to be sure, but most of the best drama we do get comes off HBO.
The Sopranos and the Wire have a literary depth to their characters and storylines very rarely found on television.

It's not "sci-fi", it's SF!
quite possibly one of THE best tv shows ever........simply stunning.
shareWhat are you talking about?
HBO has the best series. The Wire, Carnivale, The Sopranos, Deadwood and Rome are all amazing series and actually the best around.
HBO stands for unmatched quality and turned me into a snob. If a serie doesn't have the HBO-label on it, I dont need to see it.
Currently I'm even enjoying True Blood, which maybe doesn't have the quality in script and dialogue as the ones mentionned above, but it's still good fun. :)
The Wire is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, series ever made.

^There's also Dexter on Showtime and The Shield on FX.
shareBoth excellent as well. I'm on Season 5 of The Shield right now actually. It's one of the few shows i've seen that progressively gets better.
"Quick impression for you: Caw! Caw! Bang! F^ck, i'm dead!"
HBO has had some of the best television shows out there, and many of them are my favorites, including Carnivale, but I can sympathize with the OP because despite having the cream of the crop, HBO has had a lot mediocrity and a few stinkers, particularly (imo) Tell Me You Love Me. Blech, that show was the worst. In terms of mediocrity, there's been No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, Flight of the Conchords (went downhill s.2), The Ricky Gervais Show (nowhere near as funny as Extras or The Office), Big Love (has completely jumped the shark imo), Entourage (I never got what the big deal was), and Hung (it's okay, but not something I look forward to).
That being said, the aforementioned The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, and Rome are all fantastic shows. I also love Eastbound & Down, In Treatment, and True Blood (although I find TB to be more just a fun sex and gore fest, rather than brilliant television). I was sad to see The Comeback canceled...I think people just didn't get it, but I thought it was hysterical. For the most part, I still say "It's not TV, it's HBO" whenever I get told I watch too much television.
As for Boardwalk Empire, it looks promising, but The New York Times gave it a lukewarm review, and after seeing the premiere, I can understand why. However, I think it can surpass any pitfalls and really pick up speed after a few episodes.

and now amc got: the walking dead!
shareI am thankful too...
However I think Sopranos is very comparable in quality (especially the first 2 seasons). Carnivale was only given two seasons... it wasn't given the time to go down the drain. That being siad, I'd love to see the rest of the story.

I read that there are three books. Two season = 1 book. So, supposedly there is 4 more seasons of material to work with.
Yeah, who knows if Carnivale, if allowed to continue, would be as epic as the first 2 seasons... I certainly would like to know :)
Also, since posting my last post on this Carnivale page I have watched the Sopranos series straight though again. I retract my statement about the first 2 seasons being the best... the entire series is fantastic.
Carnivale would be much harder to consistently keep control of quality for sic seasons. The sets are much more elaborate and diverse as are the characters.

I agree with most in this thread that HBO has a lot of great shows, two that haven't been mentioned though are Curb Your Enthusiasm and Bored to Death. Both of them are among the best comedies on TV right now, imo.

I dont see why people dump on HBO so much. They take a lot of chances and are rewarded with some great shows such as "Sopranos", "Deadwood","The Wire", and "Game of Thrones." These are all top notch programs and I personally wish HBO had bought the rights to Breaking Bad as it would have been a good fit although AMC has done a great job.
HBO has blunders from taking chances with shows like "Perversions of Science" but they seem to hit more than miss.

I am watching Season 1 of Carnivale right now but have not seen Rome or Six Feet Under Yet.
I do think HBO made a mistake by passing on Breaking Bad but I never thought that would be my favorite show when it premiered with the Goofy Dad from Malcom in the middle as the meth cooker.
Game of Thrones is probably one of the most expensive Television Shows ever made.
HBO gets slammed for overusing soft core scenses and every other word being a f bomb at times but it is one of the few channels that can show or say anything they want.
Rome was actually twice as expensive as Game of Thrones was -- that was one of the reasons that lead to its unfortunate cancellation. (Of course after it was cancelled HBO realized that the DVD releases were profitable enough to ensure that it could have continued.)
shareThe main complaints I heard about Rome was the lack of historical accuracy and I believe the actor who played Casear.
I will have to check out the Pilot though. Game of Thrones is extremely expensive running up to 12m per episode although that is just from some posts on the foruns. I would be interested if HBO releases the costs per season foro GoT and Rome.
I amm surprised HBO didnt give Romee more of a chance even though I have not seen it. Most big budget productions with epic themes tend to sell on DVD quite well.

HBO are known for massively popular, big budget shows. I don't know what you're smoking, but you should stop.
