This ranks among the top 5 of worst movies ever. Even the title makes as much sense as a pile of *beep* The acting is bad, the plot is bad (as a matter of fact, there is no plot), stupid details which are pointless and not at all adding to the story!
this movie has been intended for a "smarter" audience, not that i am implying you are thick or anything but it has. The lack of exposition throughout and the *beep* up plot, the unresolved issues with turn etc are annoying, but that doesn't make the film bad. My problems with the film are teh unresolved issues which to not conform to hollywood conventions giving the audience closure and the choice of actress for the character of helen.
I'm only a media student, but i have analysed it with my class and this is a very good film when looking at the techniques involved, the themes running throughout, and the depiction of a darker side of london. As i said this is intended for a more intelligent audience and so the lack of explaination is often frustrating for many people and that is why they don't like it.
I myself have no strong opinion in either direction abou the movie as a story, but the films techniques and convenctions are fantastic IMO.
I love Clive Owen and will sit through just about anything just to watch his acting, but since he has few lines in the film, and most of them are poorly written, I was very let down. The first 90 minutes of the film every character just keeps building up Graham, saying how he is such a badass and everything. The entire movie is build up and anticipation, and what does it lead to, nothing. I just kept thinking, "any minute now Grahm is gonna lay to waste this whole f'ing town," but it never happened. There is only one scene in my opinion that is even worth being recorded on film, and that is the scene between Will and Helen in Will's little van/home. Other than that, this movie really was a waste of time. I was expecting so much more after watching Croupier, another Mike Hodges and Clive Owen film, but even if I had gone in with no preconcieved notions I would have still hated it.
So … the drug dealer croaked himself because he had guilt over enjoying (on at least some elemental level) the forced buggery? The bugger picked the drug dealer because the drug dealer seemed too jolly? The bad-ass croaked the bugger just because he was mad that another life (after his own) was wasted? Ever notice how bad-asses keep trunks full of high-quality gear waiting for them?
Did I miss something? The movie had a really cool feel but this plot was ridiculous given the options available to this cast. Maybe they were trying to go deep. I wonder what the $4 coffee crowd thought about the plot.
"I have opinions of my own --strong opinions-- but I don't always agree with them."
It wasnt too bad. but i was waiting for the moment when Clive cleaned up, got his gangsta suit on, and regained controll of the criminal underworld, kill the other top mob boss, then kill the rapist, then go and save the old lady. Then maybe drive off in his old *beep* bomb van. :)
i actually quite enjoyed it. it followed mike hodges typical traits, and clive owen fitted the part well. it was different, the whole "uncertainty of life" theme that hodes often uses worked well compared to get carter or croupier, where i feel it was a little in you face.
I agree. This movie was horrible, I think I could have done a better job at directing without trying, and I never directed anything! Only parts I liked was the beginning and ending, the rest was ruined, or just made no sense. Looks like there's two movies in this movie that are competing with eachother. One is some kinda british gangster drama (maybe in a prequel? ie "he killed people"), then the other movie made no sense, that guy stalked and raped him because of the way he smoked his cigarette? Uh lol. That had to be the lamest thing I ever heard of. I think the director and writers are to blame here, this movie just sucks. I don't even blame the actors! As I said, the beginning and ending were the best parts, I think it should've been more like a 15 minute story. just re-tune it a bit!!!
I agree...absolutely the worst ending I have ever seen. In my entire life. Absolutely pointless. Just goes to show you that you can't trust the blurbs on DVD cases.
The direction was okay, acting passable, but the script was awful...written my some british tv writer. It was a disappointment overall cuz it had one of the great movie titles of all time. I expected some maniacal dude acting out a crazed, avenging angel thing on everyone involved in his bro's death and not stopping until he wasted em all. But he kinda...uh...didnt.
What is it with people that they need to see something blow up, or someone running around with rage and shooting everyone they see.
The main characted was a recluse, sometimes he just didn't speak to people for weeks. That's how he was played. The struggle between his own guilt for a wasted life, and returning to that life by getting revenge for his brother.
I find that the supporting roles were pathetic, every other mobster was utterly rubbish. They were the ones who made the film slow and dull with the ham acting. Especially the guy in the back seat of the car.
In a way it did show how much Clive Owen's character was right, these mob people thought they were everything, but at the end of the day, they're nothing. People will laugh and say "hey did you know so-and-so" when at the pub, but it's a totally wasted life. Uglamorous waste.
I liked the way the film lets you think about it, rather than showing you all the emotions, it's a rare film that gets you to think what the story is rather than just show you. Good film in my opinion.
I would usually think a film like this sucks, but for some reason i liked it,hard to explain why but it had a cool kinda atmosphere to it and i liked the Owen character. pretty sudden ending but after you think about it,it was the only ending,of course hollywood would do a "gansta bro is back and regains control" but this way was more interesting, hmmi must be maturing in my movie tastes
Rhys Meyers, Davey, is the most wooden actor I've seen for a long time, not as bad as in Match Point here but still invisible. The only good line was Owens/Wills; "what's left when their gone? Nothing much". No presence at all.
It wasn't that bad. I enjoyed it. Clive Owen was actuallu really good in it. He underacts everything, making you really unsure of his character. Which is how a killer should be. It's not a John Woo movie, but its still an intense film that studies violence.
