Movies like Paintings

Someone on another thread said it was like each scene was painted. I totally agree. I think Forrest Gump and the Color Purple were the same way.

Can you think of any other movies that are like this where the cinematography/photgraphy are colorful and beautfiul like a painting?

"It doesn't do anything. That's the beauty of it."

Man, "Barry Lyndon" looks *so* painted, it's almost ridiculous (if it weren't so stunningly beautiful!).

Memoirs of a Geisha

Frida. Frida Kahlo's paintings were inter-weaved with the story in a marvellous way. And besides the cinematography it's a very film as well in all other aspects. Much better than 'Memoirs of a geisha', which were beautiful, but also had a rather boring story.

Well, this one's obvious but "What Dreams May Come" with Robin Williams.

"Ehyeh-Asher-Eheyh"

I'm not so sure about Frida. But Robbin Williams' "What dream may come" is awesome. Beautiful artwork, good storyline, good cinematography.

I think Kubrick said that Barry Lyndon's photography was based on a series of Turner paintings in the National Gallery. Beautiful film.

You would have to add the Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover to this list.

I thought that King Kong (2005) had some scenes that looked like paintings - perhaps that's because of the use of CGI, but still.

Brokeback Mountain, because of the simple and powerful cinematography.

Even though it's in black & white, the 1939 version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the first that springs to mind. Notice the composition of every camera shot. Amazingly beautiful.

I know Sam Mendes was inspired by different paintings. Road to Perdition was inspired by that painting of the two people in the cafe, and American Beauty by the family having dinner.

Can you tell i'm no art lover?

Girl with a Pearl Earring;

You could definitely see that sometimes when the camera would settle into a scene it was an exact replica of a Vermeer painting. . .but on screen! AMAZING!

I would certainly agree with "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Others that come to mind include "House of Flying Daggers" and "The Deer Hunter". There are probably lots of others.
