Swept Away is a GOOD MOVIE

Hi everyone,
I am just here to make my opinions on this film clear.
Its a good movie!
If you saw the original and liked it, you will like this version just the same.
Madonna plays her role to perfection, and the supporting characters are funny.
Her costar Adriano is wonderful in it as well.

The critics are having a ball bashing this film but if the regular movie goer sees the film after reading the reviews, they will come out of the theater scrating their heads as to why they have ripped it to shreads.

Its really a personal attack against madonna and has nothing to do w/ this movie.
Guy ritchie is a talented director and he should be proud of this movie as I am sure he must be. Great soundtrack to the film as well.

A good movie? The only people who come off as more foolish than Madonna did in the film are her fans who insist on continuing to defend it even though they know it's terrible. I used to like Madonna and always hoped she could make a go of it in the movies, but it's pretty obvious by now that will never happen. Please, Madonna fans, stop torturing yourselves and just LET IT GO...

reply

I thought it was good. The ending was really sad though.

Im a madonna fan and even I must admit that this is trash. I went and saw it (during the one week it was on!) because, well, if her fans don't go and see it who will? But I am also a movie fan, which leaves me between a rock and a hard place when it comes to madonna movies. Eventually the cinefile in me takes over. At least some of her other stuff is fun on a camp, trashy level eg Body of Evidence (madonna trying to out do Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, but who has sex on broken light bulbs, really?) Swept away however is unforgiveable, Its a shame, I like Guy Richie's stuff too. I think I'll hire it on dvd so I can hear the directors commentry, how can he possabley justify this movie?

reply

no, this is not a good movie. The problem is that many people hear the very bad reviews surounding this film (which are completely justified, this film is an insult to cinema) and the viewers expectations are set very very low. When they finally do see it because of the low expectations the movie actually seems good. its not. the world should do itself a favor and destroy all trace of this garbage.

I´m with you on that one jeannie-1.

This IS a good movie. I would even say it is a VERY good movie. Im not a Madonna fan, I don´t even like her very much, but her acting in this movie is great. This movie is beautiful.

I think all the bashing of this movie is based on people´s hate for Madonna. People´s hate for her seem to blind them and not letting them see the real beauty of this movie.

reply

No, people, you're not getting it! Madonna is a bad actress. I got nothing against her and I think she's a bad actress! The movie stinks, it sucks, it blows!

Er, I beg to differ...I think that those that defend this movie do so through blind worship of Madonna - they cannot see the reality, which is that she cannot act and 'Swept Away' is a terrible, terrible film.

i try to remain as objective as possible when it comes to film, but this movie was laughable. i am a HUGE fan of Lina Wurtmuller's original, and that film had more substance in the first 24 frames than this film has en masse.

Ritchie has commited cinematic rape in this weak half-@ssed effort. it ignores every single aspect that made the first film so wonderful. you can tell he scantily watched the original. the man is a hoodlum, a very fortunate hoodlum, but a hoodlum none-the-less...

i can't go on...words cannot describe how horrible it is to watch.

I haven't seen the original, but an Italian friend of mine who has told me that the antagonism between the man and woman was based on the age-old rivalry between the north and south of Italy, the northerns apparently considering themselves superior. I was glad to hear this, as I was left puzzled as to why Madonna's character hated Adriano's character on first sight. Not that the remake pulls it off, but I was wondering why they didn't like each other.

Just one tiny example among scores of why this movie didn't work.

reply

moons,

you have touched on one of the many reasons why this remake failed miserably. the original addressed the differences between the north and south regions of italy and the scorn each side holds for one another. however, it also addresses the larger, grander scale of elitism but still manages to tie opposing beliefs such as capitalism v. communism back into a debate regarding elitism both regionally, economically, and politically.

i recall screening the remake with a friend and we felt that within the first fifteen minutes of the remake, the original would have already efficiently setup the conflict between the two main characters in a concise way, and not merely superficially (i'm rich, you're not) but in a manner that encompasses every theme that is to be addressed throughout the film. i urge you, if you can find it, rent the original. if you do, you will be cursing Ritchie's name for his assanine approach to the remake.

I just rented the movie last night and it wasn't as bad as everybody said it. Actually, I thought Madonna did a pretty good job. There's one thing, though. I think it was stupid from her to choose this movie. I don't think anyone wanted to see the remake of this movie. I think she could do a lot better if she'd choose movies, scripts more carefully. Don't forget guys she got a Golden Globe for Evita so she is not a terrible actress...it's just the movie choices.
