I think the likeliest results are either a direct Chiinese intervention, like in Korea in 1950, or a guerilla campaign supported through China like the one against the French. It’s possible that the US might defeat them, as it did the VC in Tet, but I suspect more possible that the war would drag on until the American public got tired of it.
A better idea would have been to destroy the North’s ability to support the South and then beat the VC. This was achievable though it could very well take several years.
By now, with the collapse of the Soviet Union and the discrediting of Soviet-style communism, I think the North and South might well have re-united under a pro-Western democratic government as did the Germanies.
To be honest I never could see winning Vietnam no matter what unless they did not have Russia's backing which meant we would have never fought them. Russia's support allowed the NVA to be as well equipped and in many circumstances even better equipped than American forces.
I suspect it probably would have ended just like Korea; either war inconclusive or peace treaty signed.
You're probably right but I think with a bit more forethought & playing 'dirty pool (in regards to the Ho Chi Minh Trail & the myth Laos & Cambodia were 'neutral') the Allies could have probably contained North Vietnam & preserved South Vietnam like they did in Korea.
