Was this the first Disney film to occur in modern time periods?

Cause most of the movies before this one consisted of princes, Kings, and princesses from the 19th century or earlier.

This film however seemed more modern (for 2002)

I can think of other films set in modern times:

101 Dalmatians
The Rescuers
The Rescuers Down Under
The Fox and the Hound
Oliver & Company
Bolt
Ralph Breaks the Internet

The term "modern" typically applies to present day, not any specific era.

What you're really thinking, is that this was an example of a Post-Disney Renaissance Era film. It was released in 2002, and was an example of the good quality films Disney made during the early 2000s. A major feature of it was breaking away from the Broadway Musical formula of the 90s and not making it a musical, though they did play quite a few Elvis songs in the soundtrack.

Firstly, it is really not true that most Disney movies are about princes, kings and princesses.
Even in 2023, that genre has made up only fifteen out of the sixtyone movies in the canon.
(And that is if I'm really generous and count "Mulan" just because Mulan is in the official princess line-up.)
Secondly, there are plenty of Disney movies with a modern setting.
To mention a movie, that nobody has talked about yet in this thread:
"Dumbo" happens to be set in what was the current day when it was released in 1941.

Good catch! That puts it ahead of "The Three Caballeros" (1944)! Which is made up of shorts, sketches, and bizarre musical numbers, but which is set in the present day if it's set anywhere.

reply

I thought Dumbo was set in Depression era.
