.....why Lee tore off a piece of her dress, put it on top of the typewriter and then start to type with determination? This was when she was stressed and trying to not make any typos. I haven't seen anything written about it so how does this help her? I really don't understand.......

I think the line afterwards, in the voice-over, is something about "here's a piece of myself," or something like that. I think it's about her giving Edward something in a demi-sacrificial mode? Not 100% sure.
