Horrible movie!!!

I was really curious to see this flick, a good portion of it shot here in town and wondering why it bombed at the box-office being a Ford fan.

Any movie that has the line..."Look... He has made himself a hero" tells you how much intelligency they expected their audience to have. Ya, thanks for pointing out exactly what just happened on screen.

The accents were horrible and made Costner's Robin Hood accent seem like academy material, the dialogue was aimed at 5th graders (see above), and the ending looked like it was a bit of tagged on cold war propaganda.

Ford was awful, someone else said this movie really showed how old he is looking and I have to agree. Donald Sutherland, Freeman, Hopkins etc all get better with age, Ford is just walking through his latest movies. I guess his night's out on the town, that became so famous while he was filming here, really caught up to him the morning after. (Note to Harrison, stay out of the strip clubs and work on the acting)

It's a shame when a true story seems like a bad remake of a 100 other formula nuclear sub movies.

Watching a 1/2 hour of that anti-Christ Martha Stewart is a 100 times more entertaining than this garbage.

I think this was a great movie, and I wish people would not compare it to another sub film unless it was Das Boot because as smart people know hollywood has a tendancy to change history to sell movies like U571 before you compare it any sub film learn a little history it was an British sub that captured it not an american so you can all stop gloating the only real good war film to come out from hollywood is saving private ryan becasue it was based on true events and america didnt come off amazng hero's that can withstand 20 wounds before they die they seemed like real people. And for the people who focused on the accents in this film is not about who can do the best russian accent it was about the men who risked there lives to save many thousands.

Except for the D-Day scene I do not think "Saving Private Ryan" was based on real events. Though it incorporated some events (later in the movie) that occurred at some time during the European theater in WWII the basic premise was fictional. Supposedly it was loosely based on "The Sullivan Brothers"; but all five of those men died on a Navy ship somewhere in the Pacific theater of operations. And, there was no opportunity to save even one of them.

I am NOT a Nazi sympathizer; in fact I am one of the most anti-Nazi (translation- anti authoritorian) people around. Still, I wish Hollywood would occassionally show films depicting the terrible life for most people in Germany after the first World War; along with the self righteous allied ("Big Four") policies that led to the desperation of the German people and why the Weimar Republic was overthrown by the National Socialists. Perhaps then we will have a good look at why the German people were so desperate that they embraced the National Socialist party.

You're bitching about ford getting old? He was 60 when the movie was made! If he doesn't look as good as other 60 year olds in Hollywood then I simply suspect he has not succumbed to the lure of the plastic surgeons knife. Anyone know anything about that?

reply

I didn't care about Ford, the other actors with smaller roles are more interesting. It is a gripping tale, and very, very difficult to watch because it is so compelling. Like another poster, i felt traumatized, but that is what makes it a strong film.

reply

It was on last night on Channel 4(uk) I still stayed up to watch it even though I have it on DVD.

You are a horrible viewer. Letting those minor ideosyncracies spoil watching a good movie. I would have like to have real Russians acting the parts and sub commanders aren't always young.

reply

Just how could anyone possibly write that this movie was horrible?

Is your handwriting legible? -”Except at weekends”

Idiocy has no bounds when it comes to posters here.

The sailors on that sub were no less dedicated to their country, their captain, and their duty than our own sailors today. Thank goodness we have many young men in the military who know what duty means and live by it daily while the wimpy metrosexuals whine and gripe about their daily existence.

Amen, Jerry. No shortage of idealogues here, mostly Americans that have learned a significant self-hate from the liberal-dominated education machine.
Ford's character was an ass throughout much of the film, but when push came to shove, for him basic humanity still trumped ideology and politics, which is the theme here. What made the movie interesting was the conflict between Ford and Neeson, and the ultimate resolution of that conflict.
As someone who served during the Cold War, it was always an interesting conflict for all of us. Do your duty, but what if it means the end of us all?
The point this movie ultimately makes is that for all but the most rabid of us, there is a basic humanity that we will always balance against the political forces that command us. And that this is equally trues for the "enemy" Soviets as it was for the "free world".

Yeah, but they mask it by talking about their "love" of their fellow man. One has to wonder that if they really have self-hatred how can they love anyone.

Believe me, all that love goes out the window when the bullets start whizzing by.

The only problem I have on this movie, is the accent. Other than that, it's good movie. Liam was using his German accent from Schindler's movie. The actually almost similar Russian accent is defiance movie. When they spoke, those accent has nice ring.

OP, Costner's American accent was horrible? And I laughed at the guy on here who called someone a "idoit" good work there, dip *beep*

Harrison Ford's age and appearance are invalid criticisms. They have nothing to do with his performance or the movie itself.

By the way, Ford is still one of the most handsome men in the world, regardless of his age. He's Harrison Ford. I rest my case. But seriously, your criticism is ridiculous, and it's difficult to trust your opinion on this film.
