Did you notice this?

In the movie, Dennis Quaid never pitches out of a windup, he always pitches from the stretch. Jim Morris is a relief pitcher and every time he was in a game during the movie, there were runners on base so he understandably had to pitch out of the stretch. However, even in the non-game scenes, he never throws out of a windup, even at the tryouts.....

Did anyone else notice this??

reply

Wow, even for nitpicking over a movie this is a bit of a stretch.

reply

I am a high school pitching coach so I guess I notice things like this.
I just thought it was a little unusual is all...

reply

Geez. If he had thrown out of a wind-up, I bet he could have thrown 108 mph.

reply

LOL....what does it matter whether or not he pitches from a wind-up or out of the stretch??? There are a lot of relievers who just pitch out of the stretch with or without men on base

reply

Most relief pitchers in the majors do not throw out of the wind up.

reply

What relief pitchers pitch from a stretch with no men on base?

A wind is used by all pitchers I know - starters and relievers - when there are no men on base because it allows the pitcher to better use his body to put power into the pitch.

If you know of one, please let me know and I will try to catch one of his games on TV.

When a pitcher is pitching for tryouts he most certainly would pitch some of the pitches from a full windup to give himself every possible advantage. I too was surprised too to see him always pitch from a stretch and wondered why.

reply

Bycos is right. Typically the wind up is used whenever possible because you use the momentum from the windup to better use your whole body.

I guarantee you if you are at a tryout and they are clocking your speed on a radar gun, you will be throwing out of the windup to get your maximum speed.

It isn't that difficult to learn how to throw out of the windup and it's my understanding that Quaid worked with a MLB pitcher to work on throwing mechanics to make it look realistic. I was just a little curious why they just had him throw out of the stretch the whole movie.

reply

I guess that you've never noticed that a lot of the middle relievers and set up pitchers throw only from the stretch. You might not notice it in a game because of the probability of having runners on, but check them out in the bullpen. As far as tryouts go, the stretch is more mechanically sound. There is a lot less to screw up. If you are trying to show consistency, the stretch is a good way to lower the odds of getting you body out of rhythm. As for velocity , I've never really noticed a difference either watching a game or throwing myself. Then again, I threw the junk, so I threw primarily out of the stretch or a simple windup out of personal preference (similar to Tim Wakefield's windup).

Thank you air-raid...you must be a cardinals fan to be able to name at least 3 of them...other than izzy, most people dont know the other two...and being a cardinals fan i think that Izzy is one of the most notable to do this

reply

Yep Cardinals are my favorite team! Glad to see them proving all of the "experts" wrong this season. Dave Duncan surely is the man to have when you have all these rookies and his "experiements". i.e. Kyle Lohse, Jeff Suppan, Jeff Weaver, Joel Pineiro.

Anyways more

I noticed it, and I'm only a fan. Maybe Quaid looked goofy with a full windup. Not many non-pitchers can pull off a realistic-looking full motion. He had enough trouble with the stretch, didn't you think? I mean, not terrible, but still...

reply

A lot of relief pitchers pitch exclusively from the stretch.

Octavio Dotel is doing it right now for the White Sox for example.

I think the principle is that since relievers have to come in in tough spots, potentially with men on base, they want one delivery all the time. Starters have a larger margin for error.

Just as many pitchers look down as if checking the runner regardelss if one is on base or not.

Inconsistancies in mechanics lead to walks, which are more critical for a reliever.

reply

Its not uncommon for relief pitchers, especially pitchers who only throw an inning or less to pitch only from the stretch.

reply

Yeah al lot of relievers do, and even Derek Lowe, who started as a closer, did for a little while after he became a starter, only going to the windup full time when he signed with the dodgers

reply

k rod, papelbon, and hoffman, all excellent closers pitch only from the stretch

reply

I am a former catcher and even I noticed it the second time I saw the movie. Maybe it is just the way they wanted Dennis to throw. However I am not sure.

reply

per Billy Cristal in the movie 61 he filmed the pitcher backwards. Is Dennis left handed? I thought he was a rightie. If he is throwing backwards in the filming of the shot. This maybe the only way to film the windup.

I guess the question would be...did the Real Jim Morris pitch out of a windup or stretch (why do they call it that anyway?) with no men on base?

At the oil field. At the tryout. EVERYWHERE. Never saw him throw from a windup. I noticed, was wondering if that was how the real Jimmy threw?

reply

Nope and then again I am not an expert of different pitching styles that pitchers can use

reply

So how fast was Dennis actually throwing? I'm thinking 60 mph.
