Anyone seen this film?

If yes, where?

no, but just watched Gangster No. 1 again w Mcguigan directing and Bettany in it for the fourth time.
What a superb film! such a shame that it got lost in the tail end of ' oh no, not another British Gangster film / oooh! its horribly violent'

when in fact it is one of the best British films ever made, period. To discover that actor and director have made another that never seems to have been released is firstly fantastic and secondly upsetting that it never seems to have made the light of day.

I watch and know of a lot of films and quite frankly, Gangster No 1 is right up there, in the directing, the cast, the acting, the writing and the execution. Criminal that Bettany and Mcguigan have made another and none of us have seen it

I saw it at MIFED nearly two years ago: I can't understand why it's been gathering dust ever since (it was scheduled for a US release by Paramount classics 18 months ago) since it's actually pretty good. There are problems - the impressive location is only too obviously not anywhere in England (it's the Alps that are the dead giveaway) and the pacing in the finale seems a little drawn out (more in the writing than the editing). Also, Cassel's character should have been visibly introduced earlier (we get a fleeting glimpse of him as a masked rider), although having a French lord in an English town - as was the case after the Norman invasion - is a neat touch that will be slammed by the critics. The performances are impressive (aside from a gurning Ewan Bremner: not one of his better days), with even Gina McKee getting off her high horse to play a convincing medieval woman rather than some politically correct fantasy figure (when the men tell her to shut up, she shuts up, which is at least true to the period).

As a mystery it could probably have been cranked up a little: this is ultimately more of a political thriller. However, it's constantly interesting and well worth catching if you ever get a chance - especially on the big screen, where you'll get the most out of the Scope photography.

It's already come out?!?! Dang, sometimes I wished I lived elsewhere. I really want to see it.

reply

Yeah, i rented it in a local Swedish store Sep03
Rather good movie, IMO

I've seen it. I enjoyed Gangster No1 and enjoy P.Bettany, B.Cox, W.Dafoe, and V.Cassel. This movie is very unHollywood. It feels like a play about players (actors) made into a movie. The Reckoning puts effort into depicting people of the medieval time period (King Richard) and is the better for it. I wouldn't have been disappointed had I paid for it in the theater. See it when you get the chance.

reply

Now I've seen it too! As some has already said, it is out on DVD at least in Norway and Sweden. And I agree, it is pretty good. No masterpiece, but a lot better than much of the dregs Hollywood likes to serve us. Don't understand why it hasn't been out in theatres yet. A medieval mystery that has a cool visual flair to it, without loosing touch with the time period.

A pleasant surprise was the extras on the DVD. Nothing groundbreaking in quality or quantity, but lots of interviews that actually had something worthwile to say about the movie, the characters and the period (as opposed to the usual "featurettes" that are nothing more than badly disguised ads). Great!

reply

it was ok. i think betany was better in dogville

I would probably say Paul was great even if he was dancing around in a skirt singing the American anthem. So yeh... I have to see this. He was a great Chaucer, though...

Great Chaucer, I agree. I had thought to myself that A Knight's Tale is a movie I never want to see and what did I do yesterday? Oh, the things you do...Bettany said in an interview he's going to do another film with Helgeland. I only hope it'll be better.

reply

Another film with, er, Helgeland? Sounds cool
Yeah. I didn't think I'd like AKT when I first saw it, but I loved it. Lots of Paul to get me through some of the more boring bits. He stole most of his scenes, huh?

Yeah, he said something of the kind in an interview. Didn't like the movie much but it was definitely worth watching for Paul. He stole almost every scene he was in (especially his first one...). Was AKT the movie where he shouted his voice hoarse?

reply

LOL yeah. I think you're right on all accounts. I loved that interview where Paul said he had to do it naked on the first day, and apparently the whole cast was there... he's a pretty brave guy
LOL yep love the first scene. And the "protector of Italian virginity" rant...

Hey, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I would pay good money to see him dance and sing the national anthem.

You just liked Chaucer 'cause you got to see him naked. :P
