Would you have taken the gift of seeing only the inner beauty?

Y'know, that's a really good question. Sometimes, people miss out on true love because they have this fantasy version of that they are looking for and they miss out on what could be true happiness with someone that doesn't necessarily meet their requirements or live up to the expectations of that fantasy. But to answer your question, iffy, I'm not sure if I would've or not. In some ways, I think I would've.

No.

No because if it is how it appears in the film then you're essentially deluded to physical reality, you're seeing a distorted reflection of reality. By seeing the (often) unattractive outside and opening your mind you can see the person on the inside through their attitude, deeds and outlook.

Agreed. What we assume to be our physical reality can also be a delusion. We're just as programmed by popular notions of beauty which distorts our perceptions and Hal's hypnosis was, as the movie suggests, a deprogramming. A tribesman from an isolated part of the world could have drastically different views on what is beautiful/attractive, as would someone who was blind from birth. Various eras in human history have had differing standards of beauty.
We are so often taken in by the outer covering that it can take years to find what a person is truly like on the inside. The power to know a person's worth just by looking at them and cutting through all the presentation BS could be invaluable.
And like Hal says, if you're dating Wonder Woman and were secure in that relationship, you wouldn't really care what the rest of the world sees her as. Or to consider an analogy from another movie, it's like Cypher wanting to get plugged back into The Matrix because it was a preferred reality - only in this case it's debatable which reality is the superficial one.
It's not just beauty, it's also the health issue. Rosemary faces real health issues, plus
-She'd have difficulties being rescued from a burning building.
-She probably couldn't be lifted out of the water and into a life boat.
-She may not be able to climb stairs.
-She would have difficulty being placed on a stretcher and put into an ambulance.
-If she fell on a small child she's likely to be more injurious than a thin person.
-She could even become incapacitated from her own weight, and end up a bedridden slab.

Won't argue with that. The problem here was that Hal's interpretation of that innner beauty translated in terms of his own shallow & programmed concepts of what beauty was - thinness and all the other same visual trappings of outer beauty. Seeing inner beauty should be about having an insight into who they are right away, whilst seeing them as they are and finding them attractive regardless.
"...Hal's interpretation of that innner beauty translated in terms of his own shallow & programmed concepts of what beauty was..."
That's sort of true from a direct interpretation standpoint. But just to be precise, we can't really say that it was a Hal-interpretation effect. He was made to see them that way by the hypno-hex. It was Tony Robbins's way of getting Hal to accept and be with someone with inner beauty. Hal didn't distort the intended effect based on his appearance-judging tendency. There was no other intention except to trick his senses in that exact way.
So it was Tony Robbins who was actually upholding conventional beauty's pre-eminence. He's using one kind of beauty as a metaphor for another, but in so doing, reinforcing that those trappings of conventional beauty do, in fact, constitute proper "physical beauty" itself.
And regarding Hal, we don't know if he really appreciates the inner beauty that causes the illusion, or just wishes the illusion were real, and would be satisfied if only that were there, with the inner beauty being strictly optional.

Well we don't know exactly how Hal was hypnotized to visualize inner beauty, only that he was made to see it. The parts we do know about involve shocking his nervous system while reminiscing about a particularly shallow memory and afterwards closing his eyes and imagine being in a serene environment and seeing into a woman's soul. The hypnosis had the sole purpose of making Hal see inner beauty so we can't really say seeing good women as thin and pretty wasn't a Hal-interpretation effect.
Tony replaces one set of programming with another (Hal's dying father's last words to him) so maybe he was limited in terms of how Hal would interpret it. Equating a good personality with Hal's standards for physical looks could have been a predictable side effect but certainly was not the purpose of the exercise. Tony clearly thought it was shallow to make judgements based on physical characteristics (and had very different notions about what was beautiful) so I doubt it was an intended trick. And Hal does come to appreciate the inner beauty for what it is because, post-hypnosis, he isn't as shallow about the burn victim child and can look at Rosemary as is and call her beautiful.
Yeah, I do love psychedelic drugs.
shareDefinitely. Then I would know who I would really enjoy hanging out with. Just avoid the hideous people.
Would a Cupcake kill you?
I wouldn't allow Tony Robbins, or anyone else, screw with my mind. I already see inner AND outer beauty, when and/or if it's there.
sharei will , my reasoning is the same with Hal, this question reminds me of how Hal argued with Mauricio in their apartment when he knew his ability was gone.
here are the lines
-------------------------------
Hal: Hey, if you can see something and hear it
and smell it, what keeps it from being real?
Mauricio: Third-party perspective.
Other people agreeing that it's real.
-------------------------------
if the delusion is so real that i can't tell any difference from reality
then , why bother thinking that it's not true? just take it and live with it!
