Why Jessica Alba
Why did they cast a Hispanic-French actress in the role when they could have hired someone who was really Indonesian or Malaysian?

shareI think Jessica Alba is suitable for the role as she really looks like a native. I mean with darker skin and almost Malay look. But her role was Selima as an Iban girl. I'm a Sarawakian myself and I was aware of the film shooting few years ago because they shot near my house. hehehe. I hadn't seen the movie and personally speaking the movie was almost unknown to most Sarawakians due to the nature of the movie I guess. The sleeping dictionary itself.

YEAH!!
shareI was an avid fan of Dark Angel, and thought Jessica was a good actress that could go a long way, if she doe not capitalize solely on her looks to get to the top. From what I have seen so far, she is improving and I plan to rent the movie after seeing the trailer. I think she is gorgeous and I am a straight woman! As to why they cast her instead of a native, at least they found someone who looks like she could be from that area. Look at the old Hollywood movies where they cast Caucasian actors as Asians or Africans with makeup. Now that is truly atrocious.
shareI heard that the naked scene of Jessica in that movie is not really Jessica but a double body ?
is that true ??
I actually saw "sleeping Dictionary" and she does look more Indonesian than Kristin Kreuk.Kristin is half chinese by the way and I don't think her look was right for the part. Its ironic because the first time I saw Jessica I thought she was Filipina but she is not even part asian at all.
Karma is a bitch,ain't it?
The part where they got naked in bed when she said "susu",i was laughing so hard because she speak like a true serawak girl, really convincing."Susu" means breast.I think she said somehting like touch my breast.
Karma is a bitch,ain't it?
damnit, you bunch of fags (and or feminists).....we all watched the movie because jessica gets naked. she did, acted very well and gave us more than we had anticipated.
1. jessica alba naked
2. interesting plot
3. good overall performance by alba
NOW!!!!! let's just get our refills on the coke, get the f-ck out of here and look for a movie more intriguing!!! damn!!!!
let go and let GOD - james monroe
Alba DID NOT get naked in this movie. It was clearly a body double which is why there wa never a shot of her breasts and her face at the same time.
There is also a scene where she is on the bed with the guy and she is nude and has her back to the camera. When she gets up to walk away you can clearly she that she has pasty's over her nipples.
well whatever. the chick that was her body double was hot anyways.

SUSU means breast in Iban (and differently spelled according to grammar usage). And I believe Jessica Alba was "speaking" in Iban language NOT Malay. Get educated will ya. BTW, you all don't deserve to comment on her looks and acts cos I'm a real 100% Iban breed and I can judge if she fits the role. If a white man and an Iban girl have kids, they would look like her. Trust me, I know a mix girl who almost looks like Jessica Alba. And most of the supposedly Iban language that she spoke in the movies are real Iban words, at least she tried. And I give her credit just for that. Above all, I give her extra credit for coming all the way from Hollywood to make a movie which I, as an Iban, can be proud of, regardless of the topic. Heck, history was never so innocent and flowery as we like it to be. It could be a reality that women are used to teach local cultures to foreigners. It's still happening now.
shareIn Filipino, 'susu' means breast/s or to milk. So both definitions are correct respectively.
I had a weird dream last night...
You had yourself a vision.
im malaysian and I think jessica alba did a really good job even though her malay was quite bad.
sharei can't believe that this movie nvr mentioned in malaysia...i mean nvr shown in malaysia, but thnx to ASTRO.
shareshe needs to be darker and have sharper features in order to pass as a full malay. she could pass for a half malay. i live in thailand and we have exchange, i also have malay friends. Jesiica Alba would have been a better choice than Kristen Kruek though. As for the acting part, erm theres a reason she was nominated to the Razzie awards... twice. Not that thes absolutly horrible but shes not amazing either, i get some of you are fans of Dark Angel or hell think shes really hot but shes not that great of an actress. I think her best roll was in Sin City, nuff said.

James Cameron chose Jessica from hundreds of applicants to star in Dark Angel.
"I saw the spark of someting - a strength and a healthy dose of 'tude that I was looking for in the character. She came in to read for me and I knew right away we had our girl."
"She's done some good work lately, but I haven't seen her do the role I know she has in her,the role that will blow everybody away." - James Cameron

IMDb.com, Earth's biggest movie database, has released their top 25 stars for 2006. These STARmeterâ„¢ rankings were not based upon critical assessments or box-office performance, but the actual search behavior of over 42 million users of IMDb.com. These results are an aggregate of weekly STARmeter rankings from IMDbPro.com, IMDb.com's professional subscription service designed specifically for people in the entertainment industry. IMDbPro.com (try a free, two-week trial) features contact information for over 59,000 names and more than 10,000 companies, international, domestic and daily box-office numbers, news from the Hollywood Reporter and much, much more. Take a look at the 2006 stars below:
3. Jessica Alba
(Last year: #6)
Like Rachel McAdams, she didn't appear in a single movie this year, but the Sin City star still set hearts afluttering when she hosted (and was a winner at) the MTV Movie Awards.
2. Angelina Jolie
(Last year: #2)
She confirmed her new coupledom, gave birth, continued her charity work, appeared in The Good Shepherd, started filming A Mighty Heart... does this woman ever slow down?!
1. Johnny Depp
(Last year: #1)
Yes, Mr. Depp is now the IMDb's favorite three years in a row, as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest became the year's top movie -- in just ten days; it's also number six on the all-time box office chart. Next year's sequel, At World's End, should keep Depp-heads happy for a long while as well. However, we're most excited about his latest Tim Burton project, the long-awaited adaptation of musical Sweeney Todd, currently set for a December 2007 release.

Selima is not Malay. She's Iban..If you live in Sarawak, you know how to differentiate Iban and Peninsula Malay...But Sarawak Malay, they almost same..Yes Jessica is a better choice for Selima than Kruek..
Susu means Milk in malay... by toya_wys
Susu means breast in Sarawak language, and some other races language..
Sleeping Dictionary trailer!

It's not Malay you moron, she's speaking in IBAN! Nothing in the movie indicates that she's acting as a MELAYU. Even Malaysians don't know their own cultural background.
shareI agree with dzasmine...
She's not supposed to be malay, she's supposed to be Iban...
Malay's themselves are screwed up about their culture...
They take bits & pieces that they approve of from other cultures and and just mash it all together and call it the MALAY CULTURE!!!
If I was a malay, here's what I would do, I would be proud that my heritage comes from different types of cultures which in effect would make me more open and understanding towards the other cultures around me instead of being racist all the time... Be proud of who you are and also what you are...
Me for example...
I come from the island of Borneo, North Borneo actually, which is Sabah...
The island of borneo is divided into 4 parts, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan... My dad's half kadazan (local tribe of sabah) and half bruneian...
My mom's chinese... What does that make me? Unique and happy... Why? Go figure...
My girlfriend on the other hand is half kadazan and half iban...
So I learnt, noi aku jaku iban.... (please don't mind the spelling, i was only taught to speak abit, and not to write...)
Anyways, please do at least some research before commenting about something you know absolutely nothing about!!!
Not everything belongs to the malays... No offence intended....
That's all folks...
To all the KadazanDusun, Rungus, Muruts & Ibans...
Ko'tobian tadau tagazo do Kaamatan & Selamat menyambut Hari Gawai!!!
no one in the movie world really pays attention to casting the correct race anymore. but i don't even care, jessica alba is HOTT!!! and here i am saying this as a straight female. and to all those haters out there, she CAN act!
shareI guess they wanted a big Hollywood name, and Jessica Alba does look the part. She does look more SE Asian than Mexican. I don't think she looks like an all-American superhero (Fantastic 4) at all. I don't think she can really pass off as a blonde.
shareYes she looks Iban. I'm Quecha and people think I'm from Borneo/Burma/Thai etc.
But I don't mind because it's lovely.
I agree with the OP. She looks nothing like an Iban / Malay for that matter.
shareBecause most folks in the film industry don't necessarily want characters, but stars. This is unfortunate because a Hollywood star doesn't always entail good acting. Physically speaking, however, JA pulled off the Asian/Caucasian look well.
