When it comes to the looks, physically and how dark and sexy lestat can be, I would say Stuart Townsend nailed that part. All I can see is him. He fits it, immortality suits him. Though when it comes to acting wise, definitely Tom Cruise. It's not that Stuart did not make a great job portraying the role, it's just that Tom Cruise acting has more depth and emotion.

I know this thread is old and not likely to be read by the original poster, nor by most of the other people that replied. However, I just watched QotD and thought I'd throw my two cents in.

I have to say that Tom Cruise was the better Lestat. When I heard he was going to be Lestat, I cringed and could not believe they picked him. Once I saw the movie I was impressed with his portrayal of Lestat. Not exactly the same look I had pictured in my head for Lestat, but a very believable one.

As for Stuart, I think he did look more the part of Lestat, but needed the blonde hair to make it more convincing. I do believe that had he had a better script and better direction (and if he had actually read the books!) he would have done much better as Lestat. Stuart wasn't horrible as Lestat, I just think he was a victim of a very poor script and direction.

I don't think Aaliyah was a great choice for Akasha, though.

I do wonder, though, about what people would have thought of Stuart's Lestat had he portrayed him originally, and not Tom Cruise. Say what you want about Tom Cruise (he's crazy, he's self absorbed, whatever) the guy can act, and I think he did a great job as Lestat. Stuart just had so many obstacles put in his way and I think he did a good job with what he had to work with.

Bottom line: Tom Cruise is the better Lestat.

Tom Cruise is a better actor, And great in Interview with a Vampire. Interview with a Vampire is way better film than Queen Of The Damned by far. To me the Best thing of Queen Of The Damned is the Soundtrack, And Aaliyah did look gorgeous.

I would say Stuart Townsend for the rockstar Lestat. He made Lestat very sexy in this movie. Tom Cruise didn't have the sex appeal in interview but did play the part very well. I guess with me it would be a tossup between both actors,.

Tom Cruise - he just more fully inhabits as an actor. I am a reluctant admirer and I found Stuart Townsend to be more of a cardboard cut out. Somehow Tom made me think he was hundreds of years old. He does what he doing as an actor.

Agreed. Truer interpretation of the character or not (I don't know, haven't read the books yet), Tom Cruise did not once in the entire Interview give me a single tingly feeling. Townsend, otoh... Mmmmm.

I suppose a smaller-caliber gun would have to fire baby teeth.

I got more than just tingles from the concert.

I've only read Interview with a Vampire but Tom Cruise's Lestat was on point for that film.

The way Tom interpreted the walk, the behaviours and the appearance of Lestat was exactly how I pictured Lestat from the novel.

As for Queen of the Damned, I really didn't enjoy the film. It was so craptastic with the whole cgi nonsense. Poor script writing and overly done appearances. Perhaps this is where Stephanie Meyer got her inspiration for sparkly vampires. It could had been so much more but whatever.

Stuart Townsend did an okay job but let's just avoid giving him vampire roles in the future.

Ironically, neither actor fit Anne Rice's orginal description of Lestat.

If you reread Interview with the Vampire, Lestat is described as looking somewhat like a young Rutger Hauer - i.e. Tall Blond & European. Tom is None of those & Stuart fint the tallish & european. Neither was that good as Lestat & unfortunately Rutger was too old to play Lestat for either movie.

Queen of the Damned is most definitely a train wreck of a movie.

I enjoyed both portrayals. Though I think Townsend was better to portray an irresistible rock star. No way would I be able to believe Cruise was a sexy vampire rock star whom hoards of groupies were trying to get with. And Cruise in leather pants and a see-through mesh shirt? Yeah, no thanks.
