It's certainly a surprise, especially considering the direction the films have gone. The films now bear little resemblance to this initial entry, which in my opinion is still the best in the entire franchise.
I haven't watched it in quite a while now, but I've had a lot of fun over the years watching this movie. And I still remember the wave of interest in import cars and street racing that the movie sparked.
I certainly wouldn't have guessed it in 2001, I would have believed it even less in 2006 when Tokyo Drift came out, which seemed like a real last gasp.
