An underrated heist movie from the late 60's was a Jim Brown movie called The Split, about a group who robs the LA Coliseum ticket office during a Rams game. Featured a top-notch cast of character actors, including Donald Sutherland, Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Klugman, Warren Oates and James Whitmore.

The Pope of Greenwich Village

"Heat" was just an expansion of "Thief", the way Mann probably wanted to do it in the first place, if he'd had the backing. They're both great, but I like "Thief" just a little bit more because of Caan's character and how he played him.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

Nobody's mentioned "The Brink's Job"? Great heist movie with a touch of humor.
