So boring!

Oh god this movie was so boring. I don't know what it was about and don't even care.

This is the best of 00's.
I watched 2 years ago 5 times at theaters. I bought after 6 months DVD movie.
I think it deserves to be in the anthology of the 21st century. It is the film that many of directors all over the world HAVE to be teached and learned. It was perfect and most aesthetic film ever been, WKW is the estet of all ages, it is known. In Film Academies his name is top because of the way his senses are recording to the film tapes, he is "Maestro" like Beethoven in 18th century for example in music, he's an independent spirit which anyone can read his work at once and admire it twice !

Anyone found his film boring, even they watched the DVD as they lost the sense of the theater's dark and the perfect artwork of Shigeru Umebayashi who painted with music notes, this great movie together with Peer Raben and Cristopher Doyle in Cinematography.

We are talking about the most important film of our decade, but if you live in US i can understand your broken feelings for this masterpiece.

WKW ITMFL, 2046, Blueberry Nights?

1) I'm German
2) I've seen all Tarkowskij's and loved ALL of them
(I'll take "the sacrifice" out)
3) I've seen "In the Mood for Love" and LOVED it, too
4) I love the music in "2046"
5) I love the cinematography in "2046"
6) I think all the (sadly very few) moments in the future subway
are the best eye candy the cinema of the new decade has produced!

I also agree with everyone who though this was borint and too long, I havent been that bored in a long while. I mean, I know the acting was great, and there was a serious story there, but somehow, it was still way too boring!

reply

I think people were bored because the movie is too aesthetic...WKW cares more about creating beauty than about creating fun. Am I not correct?

to be honest the only film by him that i truly found entertaining to watch was chungking express. but this film's beautifully shot, so i guess u'd learn alot from it, if you're a media student of some sort.

WKW films are a kind of roller coaster to me. When I enjoy one of his films the next one may result an utter disappointment.
2046 is not a complete disaster, technically speaking it's a flawless movie, the cinematography is superb and the soundtrack (mainly mexican boleros, opera songs, and ballads in english) is both melancholic and mesmerizing. In addition the beauty of Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Faye Wong, Carina Lau and Maggie Cheung in the same movie is pure bliss.
But the story is a total mess. Another unfinished film by WKW, why he doesn't finish them once and for all??
I enjoyed In the Mood for Love but not 2046. Here Wong Kar Wai tried to repeat the same formula, but this time it doesn't work. Perhaps is the right time for WKW to change it (haven't seen yet his latest film so I will give him the benefit of the doubt here).
in 2046 we get to see Tony Leung once again as Mr. Chow, trying to re-capture a long time gone past, trying to re-take lost memories, and in order to do that he goes from woman to woman trying to get what he already had but lost. Too many "dead-end affairs" that leads to nowhere.

Being fair, none director can score hit after hit. At certain point of their careers they have to re-invent themselves or to succumb to mediocrity (Kubrick did it, Buñuel did it, Kieslowski did it, etc.). WKW is still far from mediocrity but when you start having the feeling of watching the same movie with each film released, then it's time to press the alarm button.

Anyway if only for Chungking Express Mr. Wong Kar Wai remains as one of my more respected directors (albeit not among my fav filmmakers).

2046: 6/10

It's a wonderful, deeply moving film about love.

2046 had good subject matter and themes, but i think this movie tried to accomplish too much in just a 2 hour frame. The plot seemed too fragmented and episodic, and the introduction of too many characters did not make the movie any easier to understand as it made me lose track of who was who. Gong Li and her short role as the black-gloved woman adept at gambling was the only thing that I remember in the film as she appears at the beginning and then once again far into the film. Ive seen a lot of other movies of hers that were more enjoyable than this one i.e. Raise the Red Lantern, Shanghai Triad, Memoirs of a Geisha and Farewell My Concubine...I guess ill just stick to her historical ones rather than some crazy surrealist one like 2046.

yes I kno I agree with u!
i cant believe it was 2 hrs long...because it seemed like 20 hours.

I make a point of watching films from start to finish, because I don't want to be 'that guy' who comes to a message board complaining about a film before they even finished watching it. I heard good reviews about this one.

I watched about 45 minutes of it. I fast forwarded through half of it, and I felt like I'd missed out on nothing. Perhaps there is a story in there, but there seemed to be no plot, and too many female characters introduced to really keep track of.

hmm i guess im not alone. my ex-bf kinda backlashed me when I told him this film was a mess...apparently he liked it so much hes watched the film at least 20-25 times and said I was the only one he knew who didnt like it haha. I guess he should take a look at this discussion board (too bad he doesnt know much English)
