shareYes, you're thinking of Oz.
shareIn my opinion The Shawshank Redemption is the best prison movie of all time, I highly recomend it.
shareThe Green Mile
shareAmerican Me, Cool Hand Luke, The Longest Yard (The Burt Reynolds Original), Mean machine (British Remake of the Longest Yard), Escape From Alcatraz and In the Name of the Father. Thats just right off the top of my head.
shareBlood In, Blood Out... by far the best prison movie... obviously over the top... but nonetheless.
shareAmerican Me (AKA Blood in, Blood out), Escape From Alcatraz, SHORT EYES,Fast-Walking, Bad Boys (starring Sean Penn)
I spent seven yrs in prison in Washington state and ANIMAL FACTORY and SHORT EYES are the closest to what I experienced. Why is everyone so interested in the prison experience? It was mostly just a terrible bore....and that is what films about prison rarely show you; but then, its not very interesting or dramatic to show the punishing boredom of living in a cage amongst psychopaths and sex offenders.
American Me and Blood In Blood Out are not the same movie man.
Blood in Blood Out (aka Bound By Honor) was a movie released in 1993, as year after American Me.
RUNAWAY TRAIN..
"Madness in great ones must not unwatched go."
American History X - although it is not entirely in the prison. It's based on the affect that prison has not only on the criminal but on his family. (Ed Furlong is also in it)

He's got an arm off!
American history X was good, but between that and this i don't think i'll be watching prison movies for a while (Why must there always be assrape? i mean there's got to be atleast one guy who did time without getting a human booster shot...)
shareOK, I like to think I fairly good taste in films. Because I agree with Animal Factory, The Shawshank Redemption and Bad Boys (sean Penn film, duh) are probably some of the best prison films made. But not yet has anyone mentioned the great under-rated film 'Chopper". It is based on a true story. And is a brutal and realistic prison based film. For those of you that havn't heard of it. It came out in the 90's (I think) and should be fairly easy to find on DVD by this point. Mainly due to the fact that it had a decent budget and has developed a good sized cult following. If you enjoyed the films that I mentioned first, you'll love Chopper!
shareI would have said Chopper but only the beginning and end was him in prison. Most of the movie was how crazy he was outside of prison.
Great film though.
oh and American History X was great.
Dunno man, the prison scenes in Chopper are worth it.
Awesome and good to see something from another country than the usual.
(Choppers first books are great - lots of prison stuff in them)
Felon (2008)

Lockdown (2000)

Ironically, one of the the lead characters in the movie Lockdown [De'aundre Bonds as "Dre"] is currently serving real prison time for a murder he committed in 2001.
