Benjamin Martin or Francis Marion in real history was a huge bigot and enjoyed hunting down Native Americans for sport, and he was also known to rape his female slaves. This film portrays him as a huge hero. Mel Gibson should be ashamed to have played this guy.
shareMel Gibson doesn't play Francis Marion. He plays a composite of several different historical figures, and Marion was just part of the inspiration. It's silly to criticize him for not portraying a character he wasn't supposed to portray.
I think this is a terrible movie and I could spend all day criticizing it, but complaining Mel didn't accurate depict Marion when his character was not supposed to be Francis Marion really isn't valid.
