He was a coward for dodging the draft, and for what he did to Joe Frazier.

shareYeah, I totally understand. But you have to realize that this was during the 60s and the early 70s, a period of militancy in Black America.
The then militant mentality of Ali, and many blacks during this time period, was just an indignant reaction to the racial injustice that blacks had endured in this country for hundreds of years at the hands of white society (slavery, segregation, discrimination, etc.).
But as you say, he did "moderate" in later years, as race relations in America significantly improved. Similar to Malcolm X, Ali would eventually learn that the NOI's generalizations of whites as "devils" or racists were wrong and unfair, and just like Malcolm he eventually parted from the NOI and became an orthodox Muslim.

Yeah, like a "coward" would take five years of prison over two-three years of military service, particularly when the military service would consist only of boxing in exhibitions overseas and giving pep talks to soldiers. And like a "coward" would also step into the ring with the likes of a Sonny Liston or a George Foreman, especially when the entire world is telling him that he's going to get killed in the process.
