Joaquin Phoenix should have won an oscar...

Seriously.. his performance was excellent. Pay attention to his 'bath in his blood' speech to Lucilla, or when he breaks down after knowing he wont be emperor.

I do. He was great!

Phoenix may not have got an Oscar but the movie did more or less launch him as a star. Prior to this I just knew him as River Phoenix's brother.

Ancient people didn't understand biology or genes, they thought keeping it in the family meant purity. Cleopatra was married to her own brother, most of the current European monarchs are inbred.

For the longest time, I'd thought that Phoenix had won best supporting actor that year. I guess another example of the Mandela Effect.

Anyway, he played a good old fashioned, frothing at the mouth, psychopathic villain, and I think he pulled it off marvelously. I love his "busy little bees" speech. You really get an idea of how ruthless this guy is.

Then again, Benicio Del Toro's performance in Traffic (not a great movie) was also pretty good, so it was a toss up. Although I feel like he won on the virtue of being a Spanish speaking actor in a politically trendy film.

My biggest Oscars grievance that year was Crowe winning over Tom Hanks. Hanks managed to carry Cast Away entirely on his shoulders for the whole run time. Crowe is a pretty mediocre actor by comparison.

Agreed. It's now 2015, and no one even thinks about Traffic anymore, much less discusses it as a groundbreaking movie. Gladiator, on the other hand, is revered as a classic and one of the greatest movies of all time. It's like the golden age of sword and sandal movies resurrected with the full force of modern Hollywood money and technology behind it, but the SFX are always, always in service to the plot, and never in substitute of it.

As far as Joaquin Phoenix, even Jack Gleeson, who played King Joffrey in Game of Thrones, said he looked to Phoenix's performance in Gladiator to inform how he played the psychopathic King of Westeros. Commodus is one of the great villains of all time, and Phoenix deserves all the credit.

reply

yes, it's his finest work, or at least on the top three list.

But he played such an ahole, that handing him an award would've been a little too much to stomach.

Crow did a great job of acting and fighting.

whatched the movie tonight on tv again and remembered how i hated his character of Comodus. And it made me so angered and dissapointed when i realised he didn't get an oscar for this sublime performance... Pheonix is such a great actor it almost feels like he was robbed on this one.. I checked that Benicio del Toro beat him so now i almost feel obliged to see Traffic , i just wonder how have i not seen it yet, cause the cast looks great..
