Is this movie appropriate for a 12 year old girl?

Why do you ask?

I was picking up my younger sister from her friend's house, and they were having a conversation about their favorite movies. But it was all age appropriate stuff they were talking about, like Hunger Games and Pirates of the Caribbean. So her friend asked me what my opinion was, and I hesitated in being honest because I would feel responsible for exposing them to some pretty dark subject matter like in this movie. But then I thought about it, I mean kids these days already know about lots of "adult" things, especially thanks to the internet, however I feel like they aren't exactly mature enough to handle it. So that's why I was asking if a pre-teen of that age would be able to understand and appreciate a film like American Beauty, without it causing them any emotional or psychological distress in any way.

reply

Sexuality plays a significant role in this movie, so, yes, it's age-appropriate for your 12-year-old sister and her friends.

Hmmm ... you're the guy who posted such things as:

who needs Viagra when you got Margot Robie in your living room ready to go? am i rite gentlemen....

(of Emma Stone) ya her eyes looked so super bedazzling when she was crying and all the makeup ran down her face, would love to lick like ice cream yammy

(of Chloƫ Grace Moretz ) the brown hair girl looks cute too, i wanna be in the middle of that yammy sandwich. (also) I love the thing she does with her lips and thumb. Maybe it's an instinctive reaction to a naughty activity she engaged in previously.

(of Emma Stone) arghhh she look sooo cute and sweet and pretty like a lovable huggable teddy bear, wish i could smush her face into my body, smell her hair hope its like lavender and peach, and see dat beuuutiful smile every mornin, with her voice like da singing of hundred angels in heaven, cherish her like godess, good ta eat like vanilla ice cream cake yam yam

(of Emma Stone's breasts) she gots da nice small ones, purrrfect size for cuddles and snuggles!

(of Lauren Cohan) her feet exude natural aroma of heavenly bliss

(of Chloƫ at the Oscars) I wonder what dress Chloe will wear. I know it will look very sexy. (also) the only way she could look more delicious is if I rubbed peanut butter all over her body.

So I'm not sure YOU are appropriate for a 12-yr-old girl, even your sister! You are clearly obsessed with young girls. I suppose that is OK if you are 13. Are you 13??

while I am flattered that you took the effort to dig into my posting history in order to ascertain my personality, it should be noted that all of these "young girls" on whose message boards I so kindly contributed are well over the legal consensual age of 18 (with the exception of Chloe who recently turned 18), and therefore regarded as adults under the law. the only thing you can possibly accuse me of is being a healthy male human being.

reply

Nope. There's nothing "healthy" about objectifying young girls the way you do. Do you lust after your 12-yr-old sister the same way?

clearly you have some trouble distinguishing between grown adult women and teenagers. maybe therapy could benefit you.

reply

Yep, a real classy fellow like you says things like (of Chloƫ at the Oscars)" I wonder what dress Chloe will wear. I know it will look very sexy. (also) the only way she could look more delicious is if I rubbed peanut butter all over her body. "

I really do hope you are 13, because if you happen to be over 21 then you are a sick, sick person.

TxMike you are not only the creepiest person on this post but also the most ridiculous.

The creepy: Hey I just had a brief exchange with a stranger about this movie he wants to know if he should show to his siste, so, NATURALLY IĀ“m going to go deep into his posting history and create an entire file on it.
Jesus CHRIST dude, what is your problem? IĀ“ve seen some sad trolls in these boards but itĀ“s the first time I see someone go to such lenghts over so little. Do you have a life? It must have taken you too much time. That is not normal. Repeat that is NOT a normal response whatsoever to this kind of interaction.

The ridiculous: So weirdo #1 then proceeds to put himself on the judge stand and starts raining down insults on the OP, repeating himself over and over from then on. WOW! ItĀ“s geniunely amazing and disturbing. Not only you donĀ“t have enough information to make any kind of call, you believe yourself superior after creeping the shweet out of this thread. And the cherry on top is the accusations of incestous pedophilia you make, like you have any kind of proof, like thatĀ“s a normal thing to say. God damn, TxMike what happened? who hurt you? ThereĀ“s gotta be a story behind this zhwitshow of a person I`m seeing. The entire thing revolts me a little.

Btw the questions are rethorical. Any responds will be ignored. I have nothing to say to you, I think someone as dettached as you is a waste of time and cannot carry on a normal discussion, much less an argument.

To OP: I don`t think anything in this movie is too hard for a 12 year old. The images and themes are adult but itĀ“s not graphic in the least. Even the final death image or the breast exposed. As others have said, children today have seen much more graphic things. However, and again supporting other responses here, I think a 12 y.o. has not lived enough to take something out of what this movie is saying, so sheĀ“ll enjoy it much more when sheĀ“s older. Hope that helps.

reply

Excellent post, TXMike. I thought there was something off in the OP's question and almost went to do the same thing. The OP doesn't even understand the irony of his behavior coming to light on this particular film's board.

I find it odd that we live in an age where the subject matter of a film like The Hunger Games is less taboo than a film like American Beauty. If you don't feel they're mature enough, you've answered your own question. I'd suggest watching it with them and having some discussion. Though if you're male, this may not be the movie a 12 year old girl wants to watch with her Dad.

I'd say your apparent obsession with looks of celebrities would harm a kid more than any movie. Uh-oh, parent slam. ī€‡

I'm a male who would have been around 10 years old when this movie was released, and I didn't get to watch until I was probably 17 (at a friend's house and without my parents' knowledge). I recently saw it again and was able to appreciate this masterpiece on a whole new level. The 12 year old girl in question is my younger sister who I love and care about very much.

TxMike, take a f----in chill pill. You clearly have an issue with sex. All the OP does is lust after younger WOMEN and has erotic fantasies about them. Like most of us do with whomever we want, the OP just happens to share it. You Mr, are completely absurd.

And yes, he may love and care for his sister the way he does but you are the sick sick sick individual who is basically a walking cliche of USA media and how sex is super taboo. Get a life. Die.

You're welcome to do a full history check on me, but I don't care because I troll when I want to. Go spend time doing quality things and not reading extensively on each user's profile the way you do. As the OP says, it's impressive but honey, it's sad.

Bye Felicia.

NO, they pick up "adult things" by DOING STUFF and that is NOT what kids get from internet or american school system.

This is handled in movie by Red Lobster and Angela at 14 [but yeah she knew all about her "Eve Syndrome" powers at 12] and one is then MEANT to do a comparison to LOLITA [her namesake lookalike] at 14 but back in enlightened times of 1950s

Can you tell us the main difference?

Ahh enlightened times of the 50's - racism, covered up sexual abuse (church, military, school etc) and 'Are you now or have you ever been?'..

Nostalgia.

Are you religious, Lesty?

No.

reply

Not no but hell no. A father lusting for his daughter's friend. The colonel viciously beating Ricky. Janie standing in the window topless while Ricky watches. Seriously, I just don't think a a 12 year old would find a man's mid-life crisis interesting and I think much of it would be disturbing.

reply

No. I don't think it would do them any harm, but I think if they were about 16 or 17 they would appreciate it much more. It would still be hard to grasp some of the concepts. A teenager really can't comprehend the idea of a mid life crisis. You have to have lived a bit to connect with it and realise just how mundane life can get.

And the other guy is right. Your posts are very creeperific. Maybe get a girlfriend and stop spending so much time obsessing over young girls. You say you were 10 when this came out making you roughly 26 now? Time to grow up, get a real girlfriend and leave the horny teenage stuff behind. You aren't doing yourself or your view of women any favours.

reply

I first watched it when I was about 12, but I was pretty precocious and didn't really think twice about the adult content. That being said, I HATED the movie--I don't think I had the emotional maturity required to appreciate the story. I rewatched it at 17 and it became my favorite movie. So there's my personal experience to help with perspective~

reply

I remember watching this movie when i was 13 or something and felt sick about it, and really sad. xD. At age of 20 I watched again, and what a difference! it became one of my favourite movies. Amazing how a person changes with age :)
Yes I consider it disturbing for a kid.

reply

the only reason i wouldn't show a 12-yr old this movie is because they wouldn't appreciate it for how incredible it is... maybe older, but now? too young to appreciate it's beauty, imho.. just that, not too young for the scenes or the subject matter, but too young maybe to get it you know?

It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack. Not rationality...

reply

No, totally inappropriate for under 18. I think that 18 or older would be ok. It is intense, harsh, very serious - not for the weak of heart.
