I wish Fern had her own spin-off

I wish Fern had her own spin-off....I could totally see her as Arthur's "Daria Morgendorffer"...but maybe that's just me.

reply

Ew.

The writers made her character super talented and intelligent and thus bland. They might as well give Fern her own show in that case.

I liked Frasier. :/

Not to mention Daria was a spin off of Beavis and Butthead, of all things.

A Fern spin-off sounds boring as paint drying, though.

Yeah of all people to get a spin-off why Buster? Didn't his show have some controversy awhile back?

Buster is pretty much the most major character that isn't Arthur or D.W., and he's popular among the fans (the 5-10 year old target audience, that is). I remember when the PBS Arthur site did a "Classroom President" poll way back in 2000 to coincide with the U.S. Presidential election at the time, and Buster won it by a landslide.

Plus Buster is a more marketable than the other characters. Most people, no matter how little they watch the show, will instantly recognize who he is, whereas with someone like Fern, you have to be more of an avid viewer to really know who she is.

I loved Postcards from Buster :(

I never really was a fan of Buster. I was happy when he was gone from the show for that period of time haha...I think a Fern spinoff would be ok if maybe they had George go with her and it was more about the detective side to them

reply

Having grown up in the '90s with a lot of girl detective shows, I could see a Fern spinoff along the lines of "The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo" or "Ghostwriter", featuring George in a supporting role.

Fern, that mouse! What's she gonna do, be quite at me? I'm shaking...

It's "quiet".

hated "Joey", hated "Friends", and also "Frasier". Love "Daria".

don't like "Postcards From Buster". or that "Postcards From You" segment they stuck into "Arthur" for a while.

It was perfect when Buster moved away to live with his dad. It was not good when they brought him back. It was very unrealistic and it is very unlikely that Buster would have moved back if it hadn't been for his dad's occupation as a pilot.

his parents are divorced too, which also means that while while point of Buster moving away wasn't about a "a-friend-and-his-family-are-moving-away story
, it was probably because of a new custody agreement. more like a "buster-is-going-to-stay-with-his-father-for-a-while.-get-over-it-Arthur." story. Buster's mom and his grandmother still live in Elwood City so it was very likely to have him move back.

I think it would have been much better if Buster just moved away permanently.

but Fern deserves her own spin off. What would it be about? some type of competition with "Mysteries-Of-Alfred-Hedgehog"? Fern is a great detective. Buster, another detective, got his own spin off. it makes sense for Fern to get one.

And even though I responded negatively towards most of the spin offs that I mentioned. Arthur should try for more spin offs. A show that successful ought to.

It's a little strange to pick Fern as the character for a spin-off, but I liked that the OP compared her to Daria. Maybe if the character were rewritten somewhat. I do like that they sort made her into a slightly "artier", more observant version of Brain, but I can't see her supporting a whole series.

I have to be honest, I agree with some of the other posters. Never really cared for Postcards From Buster. I really like Buster as a character. But the format of the show, incorporating in live action travel segments, never really worked for me. I thought it was overly earnest, and frankly, not very funny or entertaining.

It's tough to pick a character that could support a possible spin-off series. While I think just about every character is written well, and has a strong point of view, none of them really "stand out" IMO. If I had to pick one, I'd go with Binky. Maybe the writers could fast forward to his high school years, have him come out of the closet, and finally acknowledge he's gay. I'd watch that.

I'd be hesitant for a spin off, but hey, I never thought Daria would have been a good spin off, and it's now one of my favorite shows.

If they do make a Fern spin off, they better do it with writers that actually know how to handle her. Fern used to be one of my favorite characters, because I myself enjoy writing dark stories and standing out as someone with a very weird and twisted mind. Unfortunately, the writers kept putting her in episodes that have nothing to do with her persona. WHY wasn't Fern the one in the episode with Neil Gaiman? Oh, that's because the writer's wanted her to learn kung fu in a different episode for some bizarre reason.

Nah. I don't really like spin offs all that well. They add nothing to the original at all and the personalities change. With Arthur I definitely like more than one character, each had their own strengths and flaws, so it's not fair to keep singling each character out. All of the characters work better together.

reply

I've never cared for the Fern-centered episodes. Her personality was always too different from mine for me to ever relate to. Plus Arthur spinoffs aren't the best idea anyway. Remember what happened with Postcards from Buster?
