I disagree. David Lynch is more like Salvador Dali—his work, while surreal, still has structure and dream-like logic.

A film maker who is like Jackson Pollock would just randomly shoot film all over the place and it would be an indecipherable mess.

Lynch is a self-indulgent dreamer who uses film as a medium to promote his interpretation of the human condition. Many directors develop their craft out of commercial enterprise while others do it for their love of cinema in general. David Lynch does his films out of a vision that only he can tell. I commend him for being successful enough to break it in both film and TV because most filmmakers of this caliber tend to piss off movie execs to the point of being banished entirely.

Lynch has done a good job cultivating his craft and image and he's been no stranger to his fans which I think helps his brand as well.

I'm not feeling your comparison to Jackson Pollock. From what I know about the artist he was not a very endearing person to be around.
