Yea, I think this hits it right on the head in my opinion. His performance in this film is just so understated that I can understand why some people would look at it as too "casual" or whatever. It was a perfect take on the character and someone like Freeman would have brought a little
too much gravitas to the role, spoiling the overall recipe. Just my opinion.
I think it is one of his best roles as well. It is funny though to look at his resume and see that he hasn't really been in all that many films... well, certainly not the amount you might expect from an actor of his repute. It is right up there with "Ali" and "Seven Pounds" as far as great *roles* (not films) that he has played.
I might think a little differently had he not passed on "The Matrix" or "Django Unchained" or even been cast as Cobb in "Inception" as was the idea early on in production. But that is just one of those "what ifs" really.
