possibly Will Smith's best work

Although Will Smith has had enormous commercial success in the more recent years, (iRobot, Pursuit of Happyness, I Am Legend, etc.) and don't get me wrong, I think he's an excellent actor in anything he does, but is it just me, or is his performance in 'The Legend of Bagger Vance' one of his best? His acting was just so pure and natural without any unnecessary embellishments...
Does anyone agree?

reply

Definately.
His best, and my favorite, performance of his by a landslide! Watching it I had a hard time realizing that the guy playing Bagger Vance was The Fresh Prince at one time. He definately deserved the Oscar Nom.

Everybody think's they're right in a war. Everybody still dies in the end.

Wow, I really think Smith was great in Pursuit of Happyness and Ali, but in Bagger Vance i thought it was beyond cheezy. It was like he was channeling Butterfly McQueen.

LOL not his best but he wasn't bad either. Pursuit of Happyness was definitely up there with Ali and Enemy of the State.

reply

<<Smile>>...he's pretty good Pursuit was a great film. I'm not a big fan of blockbusters...so his "summer" movies always miss me...oh..and he was also really good in that one where he's a con man...he says he's Sidney Poiter's son or something??? it was a play. I forget the title...but yeah for IMDB..i'll go check it now.

that would be Six Degrees of Separation, which is funny that i forgot considering the whole Kevin Bacon/IMDB connection.

I really liked it.

He was terribly miscast. He did well as far as acting, but he's not the right "Bagger Vance". Every time I watch this movie, I ask myself "Was Morgan Freeman too busy?". I mean, there's plenty of actors they could've cast to portray the "old black man with sage-like advice" role.

Not sure it was his best work, but he does a great job, regardless. Although not the case with Bagger Vance, Will Smith does an uncanny job of keeping otherwise *beep* movies watchable (I am Legend, Hancock, etc). I'm not sure anyone does a good a job as he does with bad scripts and uninteresting stories.

"Was Morgan Freeman busy?"

Actually, Robert Redford offered the role of Bagger Vance to Freeman first. Freeman turned it down. Ditto Brad Pitt for the Matt Damon role.

reply

Does anyone agree? I do completely. It's his best work. The scene where Junah sees the field is probably the best scene I can recall.

reply

the one problem i would see with morgan freeman in this role is the fact that it's too predictable. Read this script and it screams morgan freeman from a casting standpoint. But with will smith leading the way it brings a new found wisdom from a younger man rather than the wise old grandfather type figure. Don't get me wrong i would have enjoyed seeing morgan in here, but i think it was just too obvious of a choice.

I'm with you, Will Smith should do more films like this.

Quit exhaling! You are contributing to global warming.

reply

It's a cheezy performance. Overdone. Pursuit of Happyness is way better.

reply

Are you kidding? He really wasn't up for the mentor part. Something that required a restrained underacting performance really isn't up his alley. He ended up looking very very cheesy.

reply

Smith was really, really good in this..

reply

I don't really care for most of his films, but there's something special about this one and his role in it.

reply

Agreed, one of his BEST! I loved this film!

I thought Will Smith ruined this movie.

- And I like him as an actor.

I got no sense of mystery from him. No sense of introspection, nor a hint of any backstory. In short, no motivation, nothing that wasn't on the printed page.

He just smiled and said his lines. Big fricking deal.

A great actor could have brought so much to the role, and to the movie.
