Costner's accent is horrible

Its like a mix between Forrest Gump and Chief Wiggum from The Simpsons.

Great comparison! I thought Kevin Costner's voice was supposed to be a joke at first, but no one (but me) laughed. His performance was good, but the accent sounded like a parody.

reply

I couldn't believe how bad his accent was, it was laughable. At the football game, I thought he called his son "Spot." I was thinking 'isn't that a dog's name?" LOL!

Costner really overdid it and it took away from his scenes. I would rather him just use his normal voice than attempt that crap again.

reply

Indeed. It makes you wonder how it got that far. Presumably Costner had a voice couch and was encouraged by the director to speak that way.

I am a big Kevin Costner fan and I never give him a bad word, but I will admit that I thought his accent was a little too strong at the start of the movie, but as the movie got going it seemed like his accent was more natural and more relaxed! So I'll say it struck me as too strong at first, but overall he did a very good job as it got better after the first couple scenes!

"It's a hell of a thing killin a man, you take all he's got and all he's ever gunna have"

reply

I agree. I think it would have worked better if he wouldn't have poured it on so strong at first. I was not bothered by it at all while the movie went along, though.

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.

reply

I agree. The movie was rather enjoyable but Costner's accent brought it down a notch.

Yeah, I thought that too, but the film is so absorbing, I got over it pretty quickly...

I think he well with the accent.

Its that man again!!

reply

It's the worst accent I've ever heard in a film where the actor wasn't purposely parodying an accent! I don't know how the other actors made it through a single scene without laughing or becoming incredulous.

That said, besides the accent, Costner's acting was good. Bruce Greenwood and Stephen Culp actually look a bit like JFK and RFK, so props to them. Culp's Boston accent was a bit thick at times, but so was Bobby's.

reply

I don’t know...was it really so bad or is it just that we’re so familiar with his normal voice?

reply

I imagine it's hard to mimic a Bahston accent. Too easy to over emphasize while sounding unlike the rest of the New England states. What about Maine? Rhode Island? New York? Vermont? Connecticut?
