Similarities to "8MM" (1999) with Nicolas Cage. SPOILERS.
Hi, anyone who has seen both movies, isn't it interesting that, although The General's Daughter has some differences with that one yet both films are in some ways strangely similar.
Also, did The General's Daughter in any way rip off or get ideas from that film as well, as one IMDb review have also partially claimed?
Both films for one involve the murder of a young woman and both films have one man, in one case a private detective, in this one - a military warrant officer, investigating the death, uncovering unpleasant surprises including scandalous issues of a sexual nature and taking the matter extremely personally, in case of "8MM" with Nicolas Cage - it also involves exacting brutal vengeance, in this one - being incredibly angered and saddened on a personal level and threatening suspects etc.
Both films, SPOILERS, partially track down to events that happened 7 years prior in the year 1992, in 8MM - it turns out to be a murder on snuff film that happens to be real, in this one - a brutal gang rape during a training exercise. And in both cases ultimately the woman in question ends up dead, in 8MM - killed on snuff film, in The General's Daughter - murdered 7 years later by a disturbed army man who became obsessed with her.
Some of the S&M sexuality in both films are somewhat similar. We see quite a lot of it in various ways in that porn shop in 8MM, in The General's Daughter, as one example, we see that video in the hidden basement involving whips and chains.
And both films essentially are thrillers but have elements of action, drama and even a bit of black comedy to them. They both came out the same year but I think 8MM for one came out SLIGHTLY earlier.
So could it be possible that TGD also got or even "stolen" some ideas from it or is it just a coincidence that both films happen to have a share of similarities? Cheers.
Oh, and WHICH out of the two films from 1999 do you think is better, 8MM (1999) or "The General's Daughter" - this one, cheers.
