It bugs me that Alfonso is obviously Latino, played by a Negro

He drives into the black area and is asked "why do you have the magic ticket?" - would you seriously ask that of a black man?

Then he speaks spanish to his wife. He speaks spanish to his son. I haven't met many blacks who speak spanish. There are those who are black in Puerto Rico/Cuba, but they don't look/act like Denzel.

Plus the people he trusts with killing his partner are latino gang bangers.

Oh, and the name Alfonso is latino.

Guys, this guy is just a pathetic racist troll. Putting "Negro" in the title makes his views obvious, probably one of those loser white supremacists.

reply

LOL there is always one. Negro, although not widely used anymore, is not a racist term. Ever heard of The United Negro College Fund?

reply

What about coloured person? Benedict Cumberbatch recently had to piss all over himself in public in apology over using that term.

Nomenclature is very political these days.

reply

Correct. There is nothing at all inherently racist about the term "negro."

It is absolutely no different than calling a white person a Caucasian.

It's a race classification - no more, no less.

reply

Incorrect. It USED TO be a neutral, even positive term for black people. Now, it is considered somewhat offensive. The meaning of words can change.

If you want to be respectful to African Americans, don't use the word Negro. If you don't care, carry on.

I don't think that was because of his race, but the fact he was a COP!

reply

come to ny dude there are a lot of black Latinos from the DR PR and all over the Caribbean...

reply

NOTHING in the movie suggests that Alonzo is latin. He has a latin girlfriend, that is all. He says a couple of spanish words to her out of affection. As far as his name, Alonzo Mourning (former NBA player) was also called Alonzo and he was not latino.

Not from LA but from a "Hood":):)

1. Questions are asked just to see/hear a reaction. Don't ask me why but your status is always being challenged, even Subtly in the "Hood".

2. Not that him being Latino as opposed to Black doesn't have merit, not so much if you remember he's a Cop, not a Regular Street Person, so him being bilingual shoots up significantly. And no need to get into who a Black/White/Latino,...dude would bang if she's fine.

3. See the Cop element in #2 in regard to knowing Latino Gang Bangers.

4. Google the name, more than a few "Brothas" have the name or a derivative thereof.

It's still a fair assessment though but easily explainable and reasonable with him being a cop.

If you look at the real guy Denzel actually looks a lot like him in Training Day.

reply

The utter imposibility of a blck guy learning spanish...you raise a horrible point
