I wouldn't go that far, but I was disappointed. It got a bit wacky and absurd.
shareIt wasn't artsy (because they filmed it in Italy?). And even if it was, that wasn't the bad aspect of it - I thought the nice, picturesque setting was one of the best things about the film.
Anyway, I just thought the film was overly contrived, unrealistic and convenient:
*Dickie quarreling with Tom in the boat was an obviously contrived plot point, just so, well, Tom can kill the man. And how was Tom "boring"? For me, they looked like they were best friends. Again, the plot wanted Dickie to find Tom "boring" all of a sudden, so that Tom would lose his temper and murder the man in the most isolated place. How convenient.
*How the hell did Hoffman's character start to suspect that Tom killed Dickie? So you see someone wearing their friend's shoes and you'll think "did he just kill his friend?" Seriously...
*So Marge saw the rings in Tom's apartment and the first thought she had was "yep, Tom killed Dickie"? I mean, out of the hundreds of possibilities...?
*Tom suddenly starting to become psychotic and weird as he faces Marge, where he bleeds in his pocket. Another contrived plot element to tell us that "hey, he just reveals himself to her". Totally unnecessary and contradicting to Tom as a character - He is talented, he is supposed to hide it well.
*Why kill Peter? I've seen a lot of disturbing, shocking endings, but this one was just redundant and distasteful. Again, Tom had dozens of possibilities. Killing seemed like the very last resort. I mean, he is the "talented Mr. Ripley", after all, right?
The movie was alright (5/10, at best). But it was so irritatingly and maddeningly contrived, and contradicting.
