Okay, we know for a fact that the tramp bought himself some nice clothes, food aswell as a bike. It's pretty likely therefore, that he bought some other things with the money aswell.
THEREFORE, there is no way that Mannie gave the dealer the full 100,000, unless he made up the difference himself, but this is unlikely since he didn't have any of his own money.
Yeah, my friend pointed that out when we watched the movie together. I guess the boss didn't count the money then and there. Perhaps Mannie took the heat after the movie's conclusion.
Well in the third scenerio he also gathered money from some friends, at least was on the phone trying to. I assume that he got that money from them and it evened out the difference. because i doubt the boss didnt count the money, i mean seriously of course he would have counted it to make sure he didnt get f'd over
Also you have to take in account that the bum probably didn't spend a whole lot of it thinking he wasn't gonna be caught with it, he probably spent at most like 100 marks, which Manni most likely would have had in his wallet.
Actually, I don't think it is all that likely. The amount of time elapsed between the time that Manni lost the sack and the time he called Lola to tell her he'd be dead in twenty minutes isn't clearly specified, but since he realized his mistake right after he made it, it's safe to assume that it wasn't a very long time (if you were about to be murdered, you'd call for help PDQ). Picture yourself just getting off a city subway train and suddenly realizing you need to get to a pay phone as fast as you possibly can. How long do you think it would take to find one? Probably not very long. Heck, here in the Metro DC area, we still have pay phones right inside the subway stations -- even now in 2008 when the cell phone has largely killed off the pay phone in metro areas, and "Lola Rennt" was released in 1998.
I'd say it's more likely that the tramp didn't have time to buy much else than the food, clothes, and bike -- in fact, I'm kind of surprised he'd have time even to do that much. I doubt that he had the sack for even an hour, probably much less than that.
Also, we don't know what discussion took place between Manni and the dealer. Assuming that the tramp bought only those three items, then probably not very much of the money was missing -- I'd think no more than two or three thousand marks at the *very* most. The dealer might not have noticed, or Manni and the dealer could have discussed the matter and come up with some kind of an arrangement.
ronnie might not have noticed it. manni might not have noticed it. besides, by the time ronnie notices it, manni will have already found out that he and lola now have something around 216.000 marks. so he can pay the difference with interest hehe

Ah, but the payment was in diamonds anyway. He brought them across the border, got them appraised, and received DM for them. He probably didn't receive, or expect to receive, exactly 100,000 DM anyway. A hundred or two gone wouldn't even be noticeable.
A thought I had...Manni was doing this for the mob so they would pay him for services upon completion. He probably told them about the missing money and had it deducted from his fee for moving the diamonds.
Just a thought.

You are all missing 1 vital piece of information. At the beginning when manni and Lola are on the phone. manni tells Ronni never misses anything, how he once had hold back 1 pack of cigarettes. The small scene accompanying that, shows Manni gets a warning, getting warned by a big boss means you can't screw up, no matter how small the screw up (missing 100mark from delivery). this job was Manni's job to get back in favor and trust of boss. It was all a test, as manni says countless times in the phone conversation.
now lets get over the possibilities. He couldn't have gotten the money from a friend, there wasn't enough time for that, Manni steps out of the car at noon. Iirc he gets out of the pay phone at 5 minutes to, when the blind lady tells him to wait (anyone notice how the blind lady stares and follows the bum? thought it was funny xD) So he follows the bum, and with the luck he had on his side, big chance that only took 1 minute, leaving him with 4 minutes to deliver the money.
He probably paid for his subway ticket, since he calls running out of subway a reflex. So that shows he had money with him. But even when he had money, he would have needed to have the missing money in the type of bills that where missing. the money packs where all same type of bills (I didn't catch the value) and when he replaces the money the bum spend with different value bills, the boss would notice he took money from it, even though he replaced it it wouldn't make him trustworthy.
While typing this i realized something, seen the amount of bills he puts in the bag, it where most likely 100mark bills. Meaning the bum only used 1 bill, 2 tops. So manni had to replace only 1 bill, and seen the luck involved in the final path, Manni happened to have a 100mark bill in his wallet. In full public you are not gonna try putting 1 bill back in a money pack, also the bill would have come from his wallet, where as the money packs where all neat bills. Also Manni seemed to have no time to worry about if there was money missing or not, if he did he wold have asked the bum how much he had spend. He wanted to get away as fast as possible, he had lots of money on hand, and the bum now had a gun.
My theory is, after the boss had counted the money, he notices there is a bill missing, asking manni about it. Manni tells the thruth, his ride didnt show up, and he had to take the subway, not wanting to risk getting caught, he borrowed a bill to pay for his subway fair. He then grabs his wallet to pay back the ´borrowed´ bill, saying he went home to grab his atm card, so he could pay back the bill he borrowed. The boss is proud of his loyalty, and when they step out of the car, the boss even compliments him, for his loyalty, a job well done.
This concludes my rambling, about what i always found a plot hole the first few time i saw this movie. But i no longer think it is a plot hole, this movie leaves you with a lot of questions, this being 1 of them.

[P.S. EDIT] Manni didn't deliver the diamonds across the border. It was on the outskirts of the city, else he could not have taken the subway back. (in Paris the subways are underground in the city, and then go above grounds to the outskirts, my guess is in Germany its the same, but its been to long ago that i been to Germany, so i'm not sure)
Don't be silly. Manni had no idea any money was missing. He and the bum didn't exchange a word about it, and you know damn well he didn't stand on the street and count it in broad daylight when he only had a couple more minutes to deliver the cash.
My best guess is that the boss didn't count every bill (just the bundles, with a quick riff through to make sure they were all bills and not plain paper) figuring Manni would be too scared to intentionally short him after the cigarettes incident.
There is no way in hell Manni told the boss what happened. That would defeat the whole purpose of trusting him and he'd probally have a missing thumb after that..
