Good list - but cut back on the coffee.

reply

Hahahaha, fair enough "ronatola", but what does the last part mean, about the coffee? Is it also in reference to the "coffee scene" from this film's beginning? Lol. :)

reply

No but that's a good tie-in.
I was referencing your boundless energy in your numerous posts about Thursday, and then this wonderful list - of which I went thru every one. I thought it must be caffeine driven
I picked out Excess Baggage from your list btw - and have just downloaded it.
Most of the others I have seen. Except Doberman, but it seems to be in French. Would you still recommend it with subtitles?

reply

If you like crazy and over the top violent foreign art-house action movies, then yes give "Dobermann" (1997) a go, and yes if you don't understand French, see it with English subtitles.

reply

Actually, it was MOVIE KNOWLEDGE driven haha. :) The list. :)

And most of those other films, like this one, seem to be examples of post Tarantino or Tarantino influenced black comedy and otherwise quirky crime flicks that have emerged in the wake of his acclaim and popularity.

I really enjoyed THURSDAY.
Not quite as layered, technical or nuanced as QT but still a good watch.

On a related side note, I wish that Jamaican rapping on the phone scene was on YouTube, lol. :)

reply

Ya it was pretty good.

Check out also "Blood, Guts Bullets and Octane", released the same year as this one (1998) and also influenced by the Tarantino flicks - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0163984/?ref_=hm_rvi_tt_i_1

From the director of "Narc" (2002) - Joe Carnahan, possibly his debut.

I forgot to mention 68 Kill (2017) and I bet that Trent Haaga HAS at least seen once this film "Thursday" (1998) as there are a few parts in that movie that bring this movie to mind as well. As well as this theme of a seemingly ordinary American man drawn into a life of crime and how he has to survive and at least one crazy female character - except in 68 KILL, SMALL SPOILERS, his main girlfriend was from the start of the film his trouble who later turned into his enemy.

Although "68 Kill" (2017), and its a surprisingly GOOD movie by the way as well, does seem inspired by other movies and filmmakers, including Tarantino, Rodriguez and Oliver Stone (some parts even reminded me of "Natural Born Killers" (1994) in it), this movie does merit a comparison. And it has a visual polish of "Drive" (2011) with a bit of haunting atmosphere in a thriller movie setting reminiscent of Michael Mann particularly his "Heat" (1995) film. I was particularly surprised by its lack of product placement (not a smartphone in sight) even though it does seem to take place in the very modern time in which it was made.

And in the last third of the movie towards the end, the film even moves past its noir and crime and those aforementioned related cinematic aesthetics and even comes close to the territory of modern "torture porn" flicks in the vein of "Saw" and "Hostel" movies and even closer to home - Rob Zombie's "The Devil's Rejects", featuring copious gore and torture, violent kill scenes, over the top crazy characters that wouldn't be out of place in a David Lynch film ala "Wild at Heart" (1990) to name one example and at one point there's even an abrasive profanity-laden death metal track being played - oh yes.

See that film too if you liked this one as well as generally.

Check out also the late 2010s film entitled "Burn" (2019) and also - tell me it wasn't at least PARTIALLY inspired by "Thursday" (1998) not least of which, the theme and scene of a female assailant (leave the rest to distant imagination) does something to a man of a related nature, whilst also having similar Tarantino-esque atmosphere and vibe to it. So yeah add "Burn" to that list too.
