I saw this film mainly due to the fact that Ray Allen stars in the film. He's the greatest shooter in NBA history and won us Celtic fans another ring.
I think he was decent in some scenes but largely he lacked multiple expressions enabling him to create a more believable character. The material was there but it just didn't resonate as much as I wanted it. That being said I thought he was better than Shaq and Jordan. They are terrible at acting.
Im from Boston so salute, he helped the C's give us a great run. Should've been 2 Rings but, hey, stuff happens...
Anyway, regarding the film. Im a Spike Lee fan. From 88-2005 he made some great work. Do The Right Thing, Mo Betta Blues, Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Crooklyn, Clockers, 25th Hour, Inside Man and of course, the aforementioned He Got Game. He's probably the most hated, GREAT Director in History and it's understandable in a way I guess. Allen was OK, he wasn't great but didn't ruin the film. Denzel carried it. The man can do no wrong. You could tell he wasn't hired for his acting lol but its ok. Like I said, it was good enough. Overall I love the film. It has inaccuracies but also alot of truths, especially how Schools recruit Poverty Stricken Kids. Money, Girls etc. The easy jump to the Pros for the money. All in all I give this a 9/10. I like the narrative structure. The cinematography. The father son relationship, the idea of one mistake changing course of life. Ray humanized the character.
I thought summer of Sam was an excellent movie also. Ray did a good job acting in this movie. His character didn't have a huge emotional range so it played perfect into rays normal behavior. He didn't to act in a lot of it. Spike lee likes to take shots at white people in his movies but that's his right, just makes me wonder why , was he humiliated by whitey so badly that he needs to take low blows in his movies ? Lol
He was ok. Nothing spectacular but I thought he got much better as the film progressed.
I had a lot of respect for Allen (and his shooting game) before I saw this film but now I'm proud to call myself a fan of the guy. Kobe Bryant was Spike's first choice to play Jesus. I'm very curious to know how he would've done in that role.
