ET and Close Encounters

Parts of this movie feel like it is paying homage to ET and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I wonder if it is the filmmakers’ intention since the series pays tribute to sci-fi/horror series of the past and then it moves into movie territory with this film so it would then likewise pay tribute to past sci-fi movies.

I seem to remember some Close Encounters elements but not E.T. What were the E.T. elements that you refer to? I know it's been three years.

Kids with the bikes, scientists setting up shop in a suburban neighborhood, “Keys” in ET essentially being a Smoking Man type character.
